Last night was a long and tiring night, but I finally got almost everything finished up. It’s a full on ‘custom’ ignition system. It’s an RFID push button start and handsfree keyless entry system by Advanced Keys (available at KKD Garage) tied into a Compustar Alarm / Remote start system. I must say, both systems are very well put together and actually integrate into each other nicely. The Advanced Keys module lock outputs connect into a wired arm / disarm input on the Compustar brain so that the alarm will automatically arm and disarm with the RFID tag… no longer need to even lock with the remote.
It’s very simple in how it works:
- Walk up to the vehicle (within approx. 5ft) and the doors will automatically unlock.
- Get in, press the brake, and hit the start button. It will automatically crank until it senses the proper tach signal (can also program it to press and hold for start). If you only want to turn the acc or ignition on, simply keep your foot off the brake and press the button once for ACC and twice for ignition.
- When you arrive at your destination, just hold the Start button for 2 seconds and the engine will shut off.
- Get out of the car and walk away. Once you reach approx. 10ft from the vehicle the doors will automatically lock and the alarm is automatically armed.
Initial thoughts are awesome for these units. There is only one bug I have to work out, but I already know what I need to do. Basically the Advanced Keys has a built in alarm / remote start system, but I wanted the additional range and expandability of the Compustar. But as it sits right now, when I remote start it with the Compustar, the AK system is sensing the ignition and thinks the car is being stolen… so it triggers the alarm. To fix this I just have to turn off the alarm function of the AK system and all should be working great again.
The bracket for the Start button is only temporary. Where I originally planned on putting the button would not work due to clearance issues so I had to find a different solution. Since time (and temperature) was a big constraint last night, I had to just throw a quick bracket together for now. Once the weather warms up I’ll be fiberglassing a better panel.
