I was unsure on which model is for me, I only have experience with the basic OG Hero - its awesome but not for me, I at least want the ability to sync with iPhone.
Now i noticed the new Hero+ w/LCD came out and this looks appealing at the price…
its the same price as a hero3+…but 100 more than a hero3…
someone that knows more about these, help me out!

I was looking for something for getting skiing vids of my kid and ended up going with the Sony instead. Image stabilization was better and so was how it dealt with the glare of street lights (and trail lights) at night.
I have the GoPro3 black. Looks great and gets the job done, also has remote and can sync with phone (thinking about selling it so if you want used/practically new let me know)
The 4 silver has the back lcd which I think is a great feature. The 4 black doesnt but does shoot 4K at high frame rate.
If youre a typically user any of these will work for you, depends on your budget. But if youre into a lot of video and plan on editing what you have in 4K then go 4 Black
But I feel like 4 Black is “over kill” for most people
I have a 3 black edition and love it. The only downside is the huge amount of memory I use on the hard drive for videos before I get to edit them. I want to pick up another one shortly… @rugsr if you want to sell a camera and king isn’t interested one shoot me a pm.
I have a GoPro 4 Black Edition, love it as well. I’d opt for this over the silver with the LCD screen, the only downfall is the battery life really sucks. I only imagine the LCD sucking up more of that. Also to note, you can download the GoPro App on your phone if you want a screen to view what you’re shooting on. Mine has a nice bluetooth/wifi option that I can access my pics/videos instantly from my phone as it creates it’s own network to do so.
i think the 4 is overkill for the amount id use it - i guess the new Hero+ replaces the 3+…and they’re the same price ($299)- so thats not a huge decision to go with the newer one.
is the Hero+ that much better than the normal 3, which is $199?
I have the hero 3 silver and I have been mostly happy with it. I had a bunch of software issues with it but it seems to be working well at the moment. The battery life blows but extended batteries are available.
i ended up just pulling the trigger on the Hero+
I don’t know a ton about these but I’m sure ill be happy w it.
Mount to motorcycle helmet/mount to jetski/strap to dog. what are other typical uses
@JayS wow that stabilization makes a huge difference.
I still haven’t bought any of these cameras because I want to frame my shots and for that I need a screen. And not some app on my phone either (watersports, etc.) The new GoPro with the screen is tempting. If they had a Sony with a screen I’d be on it. Too bad this is still $600 when you can find one: https://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/assets/files/mkt/broadcast/brochures/hxrmc1accbroch.pdf
a zillion people use go pros, some tv shows and movies are now filmed with them -cars, motorcycles, sports, activities that all have movement - no one has image stabilization issues. sounds like a silly thing sony uses to try to trick people into buying what makes most sense to buy because they don’t have a decent size of the pie.
Pros use gimbals that eliminate the need for image stabilization, as well as major post production to do basically the same thing the Sony is doing in camera.
It’s not a gimmick. Go look at the video review I poster earlier, specifically this part where they show the two side by side while skiing.
Yeah I agree it’s not a gimmick. The all the GoPro videos you’re seeing online are edited and they’re using $500+ software and $$$ computer setups to decrease the shake in post processing. The Sony has that built in.
The original GoPro was designed in the way it was so that it would be cheap to fix or even if it was totally smashed, cheap to throw away. It was minimalist. Now that they’re up-classing GoPros the design is outdated. Hell, it’s still a box with a lens on it.
That said I still want the new one with the screen on it
