School me on quad core processors v build me a rig

soo i like dual core… but what about quad core? are they worth it? do applications actually fully utilize them?

I’m looking to build a rig that will support and run vista fast…

i also want to run a sweet internal raid OR buy one of those externals for data retention. (mobo sata raid hopefully)

i was going to buy one of those new imacs or a powerbook, but i think i might just stay windows.

I don’t believe there are many multi thread applications. It would help with running multiple processors…

I’m pretty sure the processor is the last place that you need to worry about a bottle neck… So the difference noticed between a dual core and a quad core may be pretty minimal

dual 10K WD raptors in raid 1 should be the best thing that can really help out

I was always a PC guy until I bought a new apple. The new 24" iMac is just awesome. OSX is leaps and bounds beyond Vista, and Leopard will widen the gap even more.

besides having a mac shoved up your ass… do you have info to back up your claim to Apple’s greatness?

Sounded more of like an opinion to me…

Steps to see Apple’s greatness (on the desktop):

  1. go to google.com
  2. type macosx leopard
  3. click i’m feeling lucky
  4. navigate site
  5. insert some witty remark here

:word:

Did you just get a bonus or new job

new car new computer…lol

Price range?

To be honest, to run Vista well you don’t need to spend a lot.
I just built my PC for about 600 and that included everything including a very nice 20" ws monitor, keyboard, mouse, and all the trimmings to go with it.
Vista runs perfectly thus far.

Post up a max price and if everything you need. Aka bringing anything over from an old pc?

The only thing I see that is cool is the time machine… other than that… I can do everything on a PC/Ubuntu than a mac can…

Quad Core will do nothing for your uses, Jon unless you are going to use your computer for Crysis.

In any event, OSX might be the cats ass but let’s look at the list of software for Windows vs. OSX. Nuff said.

I just installed 64bit Vista and I must say I am impressed. My only beef is Cisco’s lack of support for the OS with their VPN client.

VMWare Workstation 6 installed like a breeze on top of the fact that I have a ton of 32bit apps installed too. Solid as a rock.

Jon, here is what you do. Get a PCIe RAID controller ( http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/sas_cards/value/SAS-3405/ )

Get some SAS/SATA drives and go nuts.

I would wait until the Penryn (45nm C2D) CPU comes out at the end of the year before building a new PC…

He was referring to PC as “PC with Windows installed.”

Wait a few months and buy the new AMD Quad core…the bench marks will rip Intel a new asshole…the first true quad core to be released soon if not already done so…

Don’t open your mouth if you don’t have a clue what you are talking about.

A) There hardly any benchmarks besides ESTIMATED SPEC numbers (which don’t mean shit in the real world).
B) The benchmarks that ARE out are POV Ray and Cinebench scores in which Intel trashes AMD.

How’d ya do that?

^^ I did the same, tigerdirect and newegg. Look for the combo deals on certain things you want/ need. You cant go wrong… although I’m not 100% sold on vista yet… xp for now

Depends how you look at it… two of the applications I really needed are ONLY available via OSX.

but at the end of the day, it’s still an overpriced apple

Suck a dick…AMD is the ONLY manufactures with TRU*E 4 cores on a single die…do some homework before you open your mouth…

:word: on the true quad core.

That being said, my brother has an intel “quad” core, and that thing fucking rips. The machine boots in 15 seconds flat.
