I have this setup. XD40 with hollow points. Ammo not as cheap as 9mm but effective. XD40 in the $500 range, new. Mine his never malfunctioned. Accurate enough. Won my pistol league with it shooting stock sights against guys squeezing red dot match grade .22’s. For personal defense, spend time shooting it and always use the ammo you plan to keep it loaded with. Don’t run cheaper jacketed ammo to practice and find out your PD ammo likes to jam in your weapon. And the boys are right. You pull it for protection, be prepared to use it. The only warning shot you want is the one that hits the target and lets St. Peter know to start filling out another registration form.
the XD40 seems to be popluar, definitely will be considering that
glock 27. small enough to conceal carry easily, .40 knock down power. 8 +1 capacity with option of extended mag (which I suggest)
I’m of the mentality that for home defense, you absolutely can not top a shotgun. As was mentioned, the expenditure of energy in the target, not the walls beyond, and the size of the projectile is what makes it great. Plus if you’re drowsy and have to hit the target the first time, it’s nice to have some spread.
If you’re set on a pistol and only a pistol, you’re gonna get an opinion on calibers from everyone who owns one. They’ll all put holes in things. One of the biggest things is familiarity. You should get some range time in to be comfortable with even handling the firearm, loading, unloading, safing the weapon. It’s gotta be something you’re not unsure of. Make sure this gets handled and fired often enough to make it a tool, not a taboo.
I had this awesome response but I lost all the text and I’m way too lazy to retype it all. Sorry man lol
End of the day buy a .22 if you want cheap. If you wanna spend slightly more get a 9mm.
I’d get a used Smith 908s but I like real guns not cheap plastic toys they are making now.
Plus one. Glock 19… cheap to shoot’reliable’greatall around gun, and will retain value
Agreed on shotgun if you’re the only on using it. My wife would probably smash herself into a wall with the first blast. Plus they’re not gonna want to practice if it’s uncomfortable.
Nothing wrong with being prepared and wanting to protect family.
Another good plan is to just rig claymores everywhere, have tvs pop out and play the pulp fiction clip of samuel jackson doing his little speech and then blow the fuck out of everything.
OR!
PS. my plus one was in regard to everything Jay said… not just the glock 19.
Happy compromise
FPS Russia ftw. This AA-12 is sick too
This thing is an animal
Taurus The Judge. Takes either a 45 Long Colt round or a 410 Ga Buckshot Shotgun shell. That 410 Ga round would fuck a home intruder up in a hurry, and would be difficult to miss your target.
I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews on Taurus though; namely the build quality and reliability are sub par.
revolvers are pretty reliable by definition, since they are such a simple design… I’m no brand expert.
edit: not sure I would buy that anyways. If I buy a handgun, I want it to be a little better suited for going to the range. I am starting to think that if I want something for home defense, I might revisit the thought of a shotgun.
I’m re-thinking 2 of my previous thoughts.
1 - I have no kids at the moment, so locking up the gun isn’t 100% needed. If I have a kid, I’ll have to change that and switch to a locked up handgun.
2 - Mobility is probably not as important as I originally thought. What it comes down to is that I need to come up with an emergency plan. If a breakin occurs, I want to have a set plan for what we will do. My thought is that wife and dog would head for the closet, and I would grab protection and stand in the hallway waiting for someone to come at me. During that time I may or may not announce a verbal warning, fire a warning shot into a safe place and/or simply cock the shotgun (everyone knows what it sounds like). That alone would probably be enough to send an intruder running. I hope. So, since my plan would consist of simply not moving and holding my ground, I can afford to have a larger weapon.
I did get my Conceal Carry Handgun class done this weekend. All I have to do to get the permit is submit some paperwork and wait about a month.
how about this?
looks nice, but way too expensive and says right on that page. not a good first gun. 357 rounds will stop a mofo though. that’s for sure.
^^^^
Just going to throw it out there, and I figure I should put on my flame suit as well.
Dogs are NOT to be counted on to protect a family unless they’re specifically trained for it. Dogs are pets and to be treated as such. Would you bet your dog would protect you if the intruder had a bag of delicious treats?
Sure, maybe your dog will bark, make a lot of noise… But will he bite? do anything actually damaging to the intruder?
They’re only a deterrent… Intruder sees a big bad barking dog, thinks “oh boy I don’t want to mess with that!” and maybe chooses another house. But what’s your dog actually going to do if he gets to the guy? What happens if your dog takes a bullet or a knife to the neck/heart? What’s your dog going to do if he’s locked up in his crate or in another room like many, many people do with their dogs at night?
Going to trust your family to someone who occasionally listens to your commands when it coincides with what they plan on doing anyway?
Sure, dogs are great. Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love Malamutes… Not so much small dogs, but Malamutes, they’re great. But most peoples dogs are more likely to show an intruder where the cookie jar is, than to actually defend it no matter how big and badass you think your dog is.
There’s plenty of videos supporting this… The same can be said that a dog will protect a young girl from being kidnapped while taking the dog for a walk. Unless it’s trained to do so, chances are it won’t do a damn thing.
and also, you’ll probably go to jail if you actually kill a home intruder in NY. However I believe that’s much better than the things that can happen to your wife/kids if you hesitate.
I realize the poster is from NC not NY… But for those interested that live in NY… Yes yes… We don’t have Castle Laws here, so we’re pretty well screwed. Texas is the best in the home defense department.
As far as I know, NY law says you have to employ all possible escape methods. If you are trapped and exhausted all methods and believe you well being is in imminent danger, then you are allowed to defend yourself with force. So unless you’re trapped in a corner of a room with no windows (a closet) and the intruder walks up to you, you’re screwed. I’m not sure if you’re allowed to protect your children/wife legally in the same way like some states, but I wouldn’t care about that in the situation.
points well taken. I can tell you that while you’re right on number 1, a lot of people don’t follow that rule of thumb. A shotgun is useless for home protection if it’s locked up.
I agree that I don’t really need a CCH (ccw is the wrong term, it’s concealed carry handgun, not weapon. the permit doesn’t cover other weapons). But, I like the thought of having it for 2 reasons. 1, exercise my right as an american to protect myself. That includes having a gun hidden in my car potentially on a road trip or something. Idunno if I’ll ever carry, but the potential is nice. 2, It allows you to be able to purchase handguns at will, with no other permits. Otherwise in order to buy a pistol requires a PAIN IN THE ASS permit that you have to get affidavits notorized, paperwork, etc… With a CCH you can buy an unlimited amount of handguns just by flashing your permit.

You mean like the guy in Amherst who didn’t get any time for shooting the drunk teacher who entered the wrong house?
