Securing your Microsoft Machine

well I think I dl’ed the sp2 from microsoft the other day independently, but it is a .ioc(?) (dvd image) and my computer doesnt know what to do with it. why wouldnt windows update dl sp2? (everything is up to date as of last night)

ISO image? use magic ISO to burn it if you have too. You shouldn’t download any ISOs from windows update though ???

x2
Don’t get ms updates from a non MS source. If you did dl an iso elsewhere I’d trash it. Windows update will pull sp2 automatically if you use the built in windows update tool.

I dl’ed sp2 from windows/dell as an iso. windows update did not include it afaik. i didnt see it in the list and the sytem page still says sp1.

why do I have to burn it to a cd or dl a program for it to work? if I put it on a cd wont it still be the same .ido? the windows/dell site doesnt say anything about that.

You can secure a Windows box? News to me…

Even if you don’t download it using the windows update www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com site it shouldn’t be an ISO, it should probably be an msi file

yea Ill have to double check when I get home…

yep. after running windows update 3 or 4 times, sp2 finally appeared…

onto which antivirus i should dl? I dont mind paying if I have to…

I’d suggest endpoint from symantec. Small footprint and has been pretty effective from what I’ve seen. I’ve dealt with 2 infected machines at work and everything was quarantined and contained. 2 seems like nothing…but it’s 2 in 2 months. LOL

PM me—

Most people get popped with some client side attack over the web that 99% of anti virus packages won’t stop.

get malwarebytes to start…it’s free and works better than most AVs. If you don’t want to pay for Anti-virus than AVG Free is sufficiant enough. I’m debating between Kaspersky and AVG to buy. I think Kaspersky allows 2 additional computers at the same price as most other AVs.

I have never actually gotten a virus before. so its just preventative maintenance really.

AVG in my use was a hog. Endpoint is prolly the smallest footprint, CA isn’t too bloated either for just AV. Endpoint does moderate spyware as well. Search & destroy is something else I run active on all computers I manage outside of work. Free and does a good job.

I’ve never used malwarebytes…I’ll have to check it out since it sounds pretty decent.

I run Avast! antivirus and havent had issues yet.

I don’t like the Avast updating procedure.

why?

avg is a hog I recently ditched it.

I do not like spybot, it seems to never find anything when I know its there.

Cause there is no real interface to it. It just shows files being updated, kinda primitive.

I’ve been using Microsoft Security Essentials for the past month. It seems to be pretty good. Low overhead, keeps itself updated, and scans in the background with minimal interruption.
