The car is a 1990 Miata autocrosser. I installed a new set of custom valved Bilstein shocks with coilover sleeves over the winter, so I needed the car corner weighted and aligned first thing in the spring. I got that done at Albany Speed sometime in April, cross came out perfect, unfortunately we ran out of camber adjustment in the front, so I had to live with -1.5* for a while.
I finally got some real autocross rubber, 13" Hoosiers, about 4 weeks ago, and had Darryl’s guys mount them up. I took this new setup to the Finger Lakes National Tour event, got spanked on a little :ohnoes, and took a few temp readings on the tires. It was obvious that there wasn’t enough front camber.
Long story short, I rehabbed the front suspension with new poly bushings plus some offset-drilled delrin upper bushings to get some more camber. Back again to Albany Speed for a re-align, anxious to see the new numbers. I was finally able to hit reasonable camber numbers, and beyond.
Through this whole process, Darryl has been a great partner in the quest for SPEED, and his guys are knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic about their work. I would assume that if you go in there not knowing anything about your setup, they will hook you up with some good baseline settings. But, what I like most about them is that they will strive to get you to your target numbers perfectly if you DO know what you want. With this last trip, armed with the right hardware under the car, the setup was NAILED to within better than 0.1* camber/caster and less than 1/32" total toe. If this isn’t perfect, I don’t know what is.
With this setup, the car is nailed down to the tarmac. Come on out to some area autocrosses and you’ll see.
