Will be putting in a see through fireplace add warmth and value to the house and very low maintance!!
the dimension of the wall:
Length is 6 FT 9 IN
Width is 5 IN
I was planning to have it so that the tank will be resting on 5 in of the wall and the rest of it will be on the living room side. not the hall way side.
This what it i want it to look like…what do you guys thing?Hopefully u get the idea lol
i have one in my living room, its a small one. From the living room, it looks like a picture, from the “den” it just looks like an in wall fish tank stand. mine is about 4.5-5 feet off the ground.
It will stick out in the living room like he said. I’m sure the hood will open up in the living room. If it was totally inside of the wall the tank would only be 5" wide.
Cool idea; only difficult part is going to be doing the plumbing in a way to keep it clean/hidden.
Internal overflows at the ends with the outlets on the bottom; only way I could think of doing it; but I’m not sure how that’ll look. Most in-walls I’ve seen have at least 1 wall completely “in” the wall so they can hide all the plumbing/filters/etc in the room/cavity next to/behind it.
Any idea on how to run the plumbing system?
Do they have any bottom up filtration?
Like drill a whole at the bottom and plumbing will be under the tank inside the stand?
I like the bay window affect but it would just be akward for a wall to have that affect.
And when the fish tanks is taken out there is a beautiful wall opening for other stuff. Lol
The wall divides the living room and a hallway that leads to the bathroom and 2 bed room.
A lot of the tanks with built-in overflows have the holes in the bottom of the tank; I do suggest using a Durso tube for the return though (google it) as it’ll be a lot quieter.
You’re going to probably have to custom-order the tank so the over-flows can be at the ends instead of one of the long walls. If you do it that way; the plumbing should be ok.
Looks like you’ve got LOTS of research a head of you; and that would be my suggestion; do LOTS of it. http://www.reefcentral.com/ has LOTS of great information on it.
I’ve been wanting to do a SW tank for a while, but haven’t because I’ve been messing around with FW tanks and learning those before I jump to SW. Mainly figuring out over-flows, DIY decorations, Sumps, planted tanks, etc on the cheaper FW fish than the SW fish.
My “last” FW tank is coming together now; may do a DIY on it, but I’m not sure. 55G Planted tank, Custom Concrete/Foam background, HOB Overflow/sump filter; VHO Lighting; custom stand/hood.
if it were me id be building out the wall on each side to support the weight of the tank, and mounting all plumbing underneath the tank with doors in the wall to access at the bottom and at the top. i imagine it wont be too deep with that wall, say a foot deep? id go about 3 inches short of each end of the wall and double up the 2x4s at the ends and have the tank around 3foot tall. figure youll be custom ordering it anyways. going any smaller of a tank i dont think itd be really worth putting in a wall and might as well just stick a stand there for it. def gonna keep eye on this as i currently have a 45 gal and a 55 gal freshwater at home but contemplating a saltwater.
If you want saltwater you’re going to need a 4foot tank, it’s the only way to do it correctly. The fish are too easy to kill in a small tank if you get water evaporation, it increases the salt content and clogs their lungs. Definitely look into a bottom drilled tank to plumb to a second tank below it. You can have your filter in the second tank underneath, along with your heaters. Then pump the water back up. Do lots of research and don’t plan on putting fish in it for the first 30 days. I would be budgeting around 2-3k for this project.
how committed do you want to get to a tank being built into your wall? i’ve had a dozen or so fresh tanks and even at those budget levels commitment is important, but i only have the one at work now since i’ve moved so damn much.
slightly OT, anyone real good with freshwater here? want to get some algae control advice for the shop tank. large plecostomus isn’t cutting the mustard b/c there’s a tad much uv exposure.
do they make uv sterilizers for freshwater? i’m not a freshwater guy but they work well for salt, kills corals but works for algae. also try pointing the powerhead at problem areas to increase water flow, that almost always fixes it. also how much water and how often are water changes?
