Very interesting that this was created by the US State Department. I think it’s a GREAT idea.

Created by the U.S. State Department and a watchdog group, the free app and website will make consumers aware of their “slavery imprint.”

“This is a new way to create awareness about the issue of modern slavery and empower consumers,” said Ambassador Luis CdeBaca, director of the State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. “If we can do carbon footprints, why not slavery footprints?”

Some of the everyday things we eat for isntance like cofee and chocolate come from regions where it persists.I was taken aback a few years ago whena friend introduced me to conflict free chocolate.
The largest chocolate producing countries still don’t have a single cocoa plant.

Thank you. I like to make my carbon footprint as large as possible, this will now allow me to know how many slaves I am keeping employed.

Meh, I like my coffee, chocolate, Nike shoes, iPhone, and other “first world” amenities that allow me to live as freaking comfortable as possible. When and if I become a slave, I’ll start caring. For now, I’m going to have a mocha cappuccino and play Angry Birds.

LOL^^^

slaves or 5cents an hour jobs?
big diff…

they are getting paid… they got screwed by middle man fee…

but i need my WD harddrives lol

it’s fun to joke about it but, and this is particularly true for Americans, it has a massive impact on the domestic economy. I know you all know this.

I dont know that you have to be as strict aas ‘buy american’ but at least buying from developed economies where people are paid a fair wage.

I’m so over paying retail for anything made in China, particularly clothing, when with a bit of hunting you can get better stuf cheaper that was made by craftsmen or union labour. Dealing with supporting union labour is still a challenge but it’s less of a challenge as compared to sweatshop products.

I don’t know which I dislike more, slavery or unions. I think I am leaning unions

Let’s see…

  1. Electronics nerd… Check
  2. Buy lots of stuff from eBay… Check
  3. Buying knockoffs instead of overpriced brand names… Check

Yep, pretty sure my footprint is similar to an 1800’s southern plantation owner.

Same here…

Electronics/Computer Nerd
Guitar Player (only expensive guitars and Schecters are made in America)

I dislike Unions more. They affect my everyday life more than slaves, and in a much more negative manner.

Agreed. Though slavery got our society here in the US to where it is today, and that is a point of great disgust as well.

Many injustices in the world benefit us. But that’s life and has been true throughout history for every advanced civilization.

This thank-you song goes a long way to make up for all of it:
