Very interesting that this was created by the US State Department. I think it’s a GREAT idea.
Created by the U.S. State Department and a watchdog group, the free app and website will make consumers aware of their “slavery imprint.”
“This is a new way to create awareness about the issue of modern slavery and empower consumers,” said Ambassador Luis CdeBaca, director of the State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. “If we can do carbon footprints, why not slavery footprints?”
Some of the everyday things we eat for isntance like cofee and chocolate come from regions where it persists.I was taken aback a few years ago whena friend introduced me to conflict free chocolate.
The largest chocolate producing countries still don’t have a single cocoa plant.
Meh, I like my coffee, chocolate, Nike shoes, iPhone, and other “first world” amenities that allow me to live as freaking comfortable as possible. When and if I become a slave, I’ll start caring. For now, I’m going to have a mocha cappuccino and play Angry Birds.
it’s fun to joke about it but, and this is particularly true for Americans, it has a massive impact on the domestic economy. I know you all know this.
I dont know that you have to be as strict aas ‘buy american’ but at least buying from developed economies where people are paid a fair wage.
I’m so over paying retail for anything made in China, particularly clothing, when with a bit of hunting you can get better stuf cheaper that was made by craftsmen or union labour. Dealing with supporting union labour is still a challenge but it’s less of a challenge as compared to sweatshop products.
