Small Engine: Horizontal shaft/Comet torque converter

I’m looking for a stout horizontal shaft motor with a 1" drive. Needs to be around 13.5 ft-lb or about 8HP

Also looking for a go kart style torque converter… preferably a Comet 40 series:

But I will also take this kind:

Other things of interest:
3/16 or 1/8 coated wire rope. at least 500 feet

In for videos of whatever this Frankensteins into

I wanna make a snowboarding winch:

What about a centrifugal set up. Cheaper and can swap sprockets to change speed

They’re cheaper but also take longer to get up to speed. The torque converter is a CVT and will provide a constant pulling force. Although this probably matters less for snowboarding and more for wakeboarding…

The same can be said about either set up. It might take a few trial and errors with spring and ramp rate to get the clutching just right for speed and motor RPM. Either one of these would work. That centrifugal set up would be pretty simple. Motor from a junk snow blower, chain, few sprockets, a drum to spool the rope.

Could also do a high speed winch.

I was looking at some winches on ridiculouswinches.com and almost all of their units use torque converters. Only the base model uses a centrifugal clutch. Looks like they have a brake too (which makes sense).

I figure I can get all the parts for about 800 bucks or so… was thinking about this motor:

wow your going all out, I was thinking $200-$300 and call it a day. That briggs should be plenty of power. Post up pics of the build.

I’ll contribute effort to the build if I get to use it after. lol

Seems like an awesome idea. But are you planning to have it go faster than the one in the video?

I don’t necessarily want to go nuts w/ the build, but I usually do things right.

Northern has an 11.5 ft-lb motor for 229, but it’s 1" shaft wont fit the torque converter… After looking into it more, I think I want to use the TAV2 that I pictured above… so I need to find a burly 3/4" shaft motor…

I think I have a 8 or 9 Briggs in my basement that’s a 3/4 shaft. Or a 14 from a Honda but that’s a 1 inch shaft. I’ll try to start em up but you can deft just have one if they are still down there. I told my gf’s brothers they could use em but I don’t think they did bc they didn’t wanna spend decent money for a 1 inch clutch.

Oh, just found out what motors they’re running on their winches: shitty chinese ones

llink, I’m super interested, let me know!

Will do I get outa work at 330. I’ll post back around 4ish.

K thanks.

It’s funny that the motor costs less than the friggen torque converter.

buy one of the 2 snowblowers i got posted for the motor…they r 7hp lol

Arnt snowblowers vertical shaft though?

I dunno lol

most snowblowers are horizontal shaft

I was hoping that this would be a design to allow you to propel up a wall instead of down.lol now i see its only for snowboarding.:frowning: still cool none the less/

ive got some old 8 horse snow blower motors. also MY g/f’s dad runs the show at schaub equip. in WS. soooooo any clutches or new motors you may decide you want i can get on the super cheap. in fact we were talking about karting a few weeks ago he said therews a few engines there i could have.
