A friend of mine (he has a '01 SS) and I were out riding around a bit today. We went out CA Hwy 1 North a bit with me driving his car and him driving mine. We stopped to switch back to our own cars and head back towards Santa Cruz. Pulling back onto 1 I went WOT and on the 1-2 I heard a snap and some thuds along w/ a mean vibration. The car would hold a steady speed just fine but as soon as I would barely accelerate I got the vibes again.
A good friend of mine brought out his truck/trailer and got my pile home for me and I’m gonna crawl under it in a few minutes here. I’m pretty sure I broke the torque arm or ta mount letting the pinion swing up on accel. Oh well, that’s the name of the game.
On the up-side driving my buddy’s car put a good smile on my face. He’s the guy I’m buying the TR236 off of and it’s still in his car. That thing pulls mean and hard right to 6800. I can’t wait.
I checked it out, the torque arm is broken at all the back mounting bolt holes. When the torque arm broke it allowed the pinion to kick up. With my car being as low as it is that caused the driveshaft to contact an e-brake bracket at the top of the drivesaft-tunnel that wore a few nice grooves into it, so it’s scrap too.
If I get anything aftermarket it’d be a Global West Trac-Link (remember, I’m an AutoXer not a drag racer, well mostly). But they are big $ and I’m broke as fawk. I’m sure somebody in my club has their stocker laying around.
Consider them sold man! If it’s cool with you I’m just going to wait a day or two to see if anything surfaces locally. But I’m pretty sure I’ll need 'em. Thanks!!!
Well it’s 10am and the rear end, driveshaft and torque arm are all out. Not bad for about an hour and a half, by myself w/o all the right tools.
Pewter, can you get a rough estimate on the shipping for the DS (95062 area code) and do you take Paypal or Credit Cards? It looks like I already have a few offers localy for a stock TA and one good deal on a LG TA so I won’t need that. But I do want the DS. Thanks a ton.
Oh, and before anybody says “why are you taking the whole rearend out to replace the torque arm” I’m swapping the rear while I’m under there too. Mine is on it’s death-bed and I got a low mileage one sitting in the garage.
