But wondering something how many miles can you put on these things before they die. Im seeing people try and sell a 190k mile car for 8-9 grand. Is it honestly worth spending that much one one?
300k with proper maintenance…
a few years ago when I was looking at them you could get a 100k car for 10k.
i’m all about them… i found decent ones, few years old with 85k miles was still damn near 15k
they definitely hold value and you aren’t going to talk a salesman down… they can sell it all day long for that price, dumbasses spend tons of money on them.
Absolutely-- proper maintainance is the key. Make sure owner has service records/ receipts and get a good pre-purchase inspection done before you buy.
Diesel Rabbit 300k+ and you will be badass rockin the best Vw ever:boink
That’s what I’ve found out here too. I’d love one for a DD (I’d brew bio-diesel in my garage) but they just hold too much value. I don’t care how reliable they can be the gamble of a ~200k mile car for $10k is just too intense for me. Sure… the motor is good for 300k. What about the tranny? What about all the suspension? Interior? And most of all the awesome VW wiring/electrical?
A buddy of mine just bought one w/ around 180k and he’s having to replace all the susp. bushings etc. It’s getting costly quick.

trust the punnisher my first car was a 1991 jetta diesel . i mean n/a diesel, non turbo. it was giving to me by my grandfather who bought it new. when i go it it had about 189,xxx miles. i beat the shit out of it . i was told never to take it over 50 mph or it would over heat and the water pump would blow. but anyway i could drive from pitt to washington dc and halfway back to pitt on one tank of diesel. it was worth it . i sold it with 205,xxx on ebay for like 1,500 … glo plugs are sweet
used struts are 25 a side. bushings/strut bearings are like 25 a side too. outside of that, dont see much else go wrong on tdi golf/jetta/beetles. have a few that get serviced at work well over 250k, and im talking 96 and newer cars.
My father had a 1998 TDI Jetta and it was a great vehicle. It had well over 200K on it and it ran like a champ. The only thing ever done (other than routine maint.) was fuel filter, fuel pump. Electricals were still OK at that time.
It was such a good vehicle for him that I actually thought of getting a TDI Jetta instead of the Charger.
This car is no longer listed for sale.
