Solid state drives

Anyone use one yet?

Just ordered 2 new Dell latitudes with 30GB ones…

no but from what ive read, they arent as fast as everybody seems to think they are, somewhere there was a review on them, and read/write just wasnt cutting it.

Until capacity gets upwards of 100gig theres no point…30gig wouldnt even fit my on-the-go porn collection, let alone music and vids.

are they full on solid state or just a hard drive with a big solid state buffer?

Full on, quite pricey. Bandwidth isn’t there yet, but the access times tons better should improve over time as with all things

If these are flash based, what is the lifespan? Rate of degredation, ect?

wont know “real” times til they’ve been in the wild for some time. Manufacturers will throw out numbers but they are laboratory best guesses.

i’ll let you know.

Theyre cool beacouse you cant really brake them, or loose your data. But, the capacites are poor, and theyre pricey… But if you can handle the 30gb you got, then i hear theyre slightly quicker than normal, but theyre not blazing fast yet, just generally faster when doing everyday aplications…

oh noooes my hard drive got braked
