Someone build me a computer

i want:

lots of storage. 500 gb+
lots of ram. 2gb +
1 dvd burner, at least 8x dual layer
1 fast dvd rom
1 NIC
couple usb ports

video card can be cheap

sound card is not required

processor can be cheap, slow.

this is going to be used primarily for backing up/burning dvd’s, storing mp3s.

other suggestions welcome. looking for a parts list with prices.

edit: when i say build me a computer, i dont literally mean build me a computer. just get me a parts list of EVERYTHING i need from HDD’s to power supplys

someone will build you something very redundant, hopefully…

Max price you want to spend?
Do you play any games at all?

This is the setup I have…

max price: lets say $600-800
no games

again, i basically want a storage monster. not gonna be used for anything other than storing mp3s, backing up/burning dvd’s.

Ummm

You may be going overboard on the ram if thats all you are using it for. If you want it to be a server for MP3s it won’t need much to function well. Just make sure you have fast hard drives. SCSI will probably cost you a buttload for alot of storeage so SATA is probably the better choice.

SATA RAID setup ftw.

No need for 2GB of ram even though it’s so cheap these days. 1GB would be more than enough and you could probably even get by on 512.

+1

Storage is the most expensive thing - you want 500GB?

RAID 5 for some redundancy so the if one of your cheap ass drives die you can still rebuild the image

I don’t think you’re gonna get 500GB reliably under 800 bucks…

eventually I’ll get some RAID going at home, now that the chode wont be using my PC

i really didnt know how much it was going to cost, i was just throwing out what i would LIKE to spend…

To be honest raid would be nice for that type of setup but on a budget, don’t bother its just gonna pull data slower.

Do it!

if u want 500gb u might as well just do it on seperate drives and get a good amount of RAM

this is what i was thinking.

I bought a 9800PRO from Jack for $80 that I can sell you instead of the 9600. I didn’t realize I needed a PCI-Express card so it’s just sitting around. PM if interested.

EDIT: I also bought a 17" CRT monitor that I am not using. It is listed in classifieds.

Ugh, I have an old Pentium 4 1.5 GHZ box at home. 384 MB RAM.

Windows XP Pro, and I’ll tell you how to connect from anywhere to listen to your MP3s streaming through Remote Desktop.

I’ll buy you a new DVD Burner, and some 300GB Hard Drives.

I’ll install a bunch of software.

Or, I can even build you a Pentium III 933… same kinda deal.

Since you don’t play games with it, and its just a file server, thats all you need.
Hit me back if you’re interested, and Ill actually do some pricing. I do this for a living, and I am sick of people asking me to build them a computer, and I put time into it… and they end up not even doing it. My time is valuable.
