Checklist for Building a Computer

Ok, so I want to build a computer. I have a pretty good idea of what I need, but to make this easy, can someone maybe post up a thorough checklist of what exactly is needed to build a computer?

case + power supply
motherboard
ram
dvd rom drives
graphics card
ethernet card
hard disk(S)
sound card

not a dvd rom drive… a dvd burner drive

Also… get a floppy drive. Some people will say that you don’t need one but they can always be handy.

shaba’s list is pretty good. best thing to do is to decide exactly what you intend to do with the machine, and then build it for those reasons. the bottomline is always the apps you intend to run.

NEC Black IDE/ATAPI DVD Burner Model ND-3550A - OEM

Is that pretty decent? Am I missing anything, or should I change anything?

not a bad budget setup - don’t expect to play the latest doom at full rez though. if the mobo has built in sound (most do these days) then the SB Live is redundant. I would say this system is excellent for surfing, and most work/school apps. it’ll be a little slow rippin dvds, but certainly not too bad.

my fav retailer is newegg. stay away from tiger direct if it involves rebates - they’re not a good company to deal with in that aspect.

what is your budget? Toss up a number, and I bet some people will have fun just putting something together for ya…

:hay:

:word:

def under 1000, but if it’s going to be near that i want a 19" lcd too

That is a good setup you’ve got there.I personally would just get rid of the “Sempron 2300+”,the sempron 2300+ is the same thing as a barton core athlon XP processor.

The Sempron 64’s on the other hand…are up there in performance with the athlon 64’s and in alot of the benchmarks i’ve seen they are only a few points behind.$99 for the Sempron 3100+ 64 bit,but why not spend another $15 and get the athlon64 with the extra L2 cache? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103452

Socket 754 stuff is CHEAP now and you can build a nice budget system because of it being outdated.

Here is the sempron for $99…

Spending the extra on either processor will make a big difference.

see that’s the thing i don’t know the difference between stuff like that. if someone wants to put together a system for me, that’d be fuccillo.

Here is what i’d build for myself (similar budget)…

Case/PSU : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129155

Motherboard : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157081

Processor : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103537

Ram : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145440

Video Card : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814142052

Hard Drive : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148065

DVD Burner : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058

Total build cost : $670 and that leaves you enough to be slightly under $1,000 with a 19in LCD.

I can put one together that is a little cheaper but wont be as powerful, what will you be doing with the system?
