Someone to teach me how to ride?

I’m looking to pickup a bike here within the next few weeks, sad thing is I’ve owned 2 and only ridden about 30 seconds total , 4 years ago. I’m looking for someone who can show me the ins & outs of riding. I would be more than willing to compensate for time, kind of hoping someone would do it out of the kindness of their heart, since I know NO ONE who rides…but like I said, I understand if you want to get paid for teaching a newb. I can drive standard and have gotten my permit 3 times now…

Thanks in advance!

location? i am not a professional instructor but i would gladly help out free of charge. and, yes, i do have my m license. do you have a bike?

I’m in Rochester. I don’t have one at the moment, posted in the auto-trader section…have about 3k and i’m looking for anything. looking into a few Ninja 500’s, Katana’s…wouldnt mind something along the lines of a Vulcan either, hoping to pick something up within 2-3 weeks tops.

And I don’t expect anyone to be an instructor or anything, just would like some advice from someone who;s been riding for years. there are a few places around here with huge empty pavement parking lots I know of, and I can get my bike there on the back of my pickup. I have gear from when I had my other bikes, so all I’ll really need is a bike!

I highly recommend you take the MSF beginners course in addition to any other help.

I plan on it! Unfortunately their earliest classes offered at MCC are mid July, and I’d like to start before then.

i have someone that can help you. give me a pm.

I highly recommend the MSF Basic Riders Course too,

www.ridewpride.com take the course, get your lic, and have fun. A bunch of us are instructors over on Sportriders.org Ranges in Derby, ECC North, and Eastern Hills Mall now.

ridewpride ftw.
Meanwhile, spend a lot of time in a parking lot mastering all maneuvers that don’t exceed 20mph. So many new riders just tip over at intersections or take slow sharp turns too wide and end up going down.
Willybeen had a good write-up of exercises that you can do in a parking lot that are extremely helpful to a new rider, i just can’t find them on here. (and according to the member list, he hasn’t been online since 12-31-1969 07:00 PM…lol?).

Damn willy and his time traveling!!

Got anyplace you can ride a dirtbike? If you do, buy one cheap, learn to ride it, then step up to a street bike. Sure you can hop on a street bike and learn that way, but you’ll learn how to wipe out, spill, and avoid accidents in the dirt, and then get up and walk away. The bike will still work too.

Just a suggestion. I’ve been riding since I was 4 and everyone I rode with growing up are the best street riders I know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bakxIoeFLPc there you go, all the riding advise you need.

But really completely ignore anything in that video. Honestly take a MSF course. Even reading a riding book on occasion isnt a bad idea, and has saved my ass a few times.

This is very true. I spent my youth on minibikes and dirtbikes too. My first minibike was a green Rupp lol, i got it in 2nd grade. Crashing on that when you’re that little really makes you appreciate NOT crashing. But even though there was a pretty big gap between my transition from dirt to street, it was still extremely helpful. It all felt extremely familiar.

ya, learning on a dirtbike is def the way to go

It’s what I did, hence the name. But lemme make this clear, riding a dirt bike and riding a sportbike ARE NOT the same. You don’t have cars, deer, concrete, rocks, dogs, cell phones and teenagers to worry about on a dirt bike, those are all factors with riding a sport bike.

Be smart and stay safe, too many people forget this.

What year would this have been ? There weren’t a lot in the area when I had mine. Wonder if you bought it from me. lol

I had a 2hp Indian in ‘87. No brakes and a valvespring for suspension. Up to the Rupp with a 5hp Tec’ and then a PW80. Then to a street bike in the field. That’s when I became a man. Haha

Lol. I don’t know what year it was, i got it from my cousin. 70’s i’d say. He got it from his dad who used to run a scrapyard. Someone brought it in for scrap because it wouldn’t run. I think he just cleaned the carb and it was good to go lol. It was the 5hp as well, also had shitty brakes and the front forks were seized up haha. Sometimes the throttle would stick when I would pull it over to start it… when it fired it was like riding a rocket and my 45lb scrawny self didn’t slow it down one bit

I would try 585riders.com. I’m sure someone down there would be more than willing to help out.

Just stay away from 315riders…they’re a bunch of morons.
