no 77redneck is right. the first movie “star wars” a new hope was episode 4. it says so in the very first scene of the movie:gives:

It was not named “Star Wars Episode IV: A new Hope” for the original release in 1977.

“Episode IV: A NEW HOPE” was added to the opening crawl from 1981 onward.
