Change the registration so that it’s admin/moderator approval required, and throw in one short entry on “why you want to join SON?” Nothing fancy, just a quick line, to assure that it’s a real person. It can also be used to turn away idiots too, as an added bonus

This is great if our admins were paid employee’s however since they’re volunteers I would suggest a simple captcha. I believe it’s an easy modification on phpBB and shouldn’t take near as much resources as the above solution.

We already have that in the registration.
Try logging out, and then trying to register.
Its’ not exactly squirmy text but still.
