I haven’t seen one of them in years. I can’t believe they were that much money to begin with. I thought they were nicer looking when I was younger, but I’d probably still drive one.
When I was reposessing cars a few years back, we picked one up over in Coraopolis (Black with biege leather). At the time, I had a Impreza 2.5RS, so I was familiar with Subies. Anyway, we could not tow it because of AWD, so I snuck down the driveway to take the car. There was a wheel/tire (that was flat) sitting on the porch next to the car, so I threw it in the rear hatch, jumped in the driver’s seat & took off (sometimes we had keys back then & I believe we had keys to this one, because of AWD & not being able to tow it). So we headed out to rte 79S to head towards Greentree (we used to pickup a few cars & then take them to a parking lot, until we accumulated a few to take to the yard). I’m diggin’ this SVX thing & I thought it ran alot better than my 2.5RS. So I’m doing about 130mph for a while (past my buddy in the tow truck) & fly the whole way to Greentree. WHen I pull in the lot, he comes pulling in a few minutes later & starts bitching at me because the car had a mini spare on the right rear & that I’m a jerkoff for going that fast on one. I never even looked to see there was a mini spare on it. I just figured it was a full size spare on the car. That car was so stable at those speeds, you would have never thought there was anything but a full size tire on it.
It was a nice car, very comfortable, but an automatic. I said then, if it were a 5 speed, I would have bought it & sold my 2.5RS. I only drove it about 25 miles or so, but it was nice.
When I use to deliver parts to the shop that was in your building before you got there, they actually did a 5 speed swap on a SVX. They spent about a week front start to finish (working on it on and off plus gathering some extra parts they needed). I remember them saying something about most the parts they needed were off a certain year of legacy? Either way when it was done they took the car out and said it was transformed, they never expected the car to be that fast and it was definitely worth the time put into it.
my old roomy had one. i didnt like the way it looked but taht is just personal taste. so if you like it then good. but it performed nice and i road in the back from state college to the pocono’s not so great of a ride. we drove it in 8" of snow also. did pretty damn good. even with Z rated tires. if you put blizzaks on that bitch it would be f’n unstoppable. i towed one about 4 months ago with a bad tranny. 4200 + bucs from bowser for a tranny so they had it towed home. it since then has been moved so he must have gotten the tranny fixed. they are nice and handle well. but i dont like the looks but thats up to you. i say get one if you can find one fairly cheap.
Well, I can tell you for fact, you will have fun with a 2.5RS. Do NOT get an auto, though (I repeod one of those & it was kinda boring - it’s amazing the difference between the two cars). Words can’t express how much fun a 5 spd 2.5RS can be (from excellent traction during high rpm launches on dry pavement, to doing 4 wheel drifts in snow covered parking lots). I bought mine in 1998 & sold it when I bought my Typhoon in 2001. I put 70K on it with very little more than regular maintenance items. The front brakes lasted 50K. I had some mods done to it, but mechanically it was stock (other than wheels/exhaust). Not the fastest car out there by any stretch, but probably one of the most fun I’ve ever owned.
on subaru’s in general, failures are prone to the spindles–bearing failure and abs ring chip. Abs pumps sell well too. rear suspension wise, pray you never bend a locating arm. as seldomly can you take apart a rear subaru suspesnion. as the arms freeze to the stub axles. Subaru uses one long bolt/nut to connect locating arms to stub axles. I swear they never heard of anti-sieze. speaking fo which, sliders freeze up often on the brakes.
other than that, everything else is normal wear and tear. engines are strong, just do the belts on schedule.
My sister just bought a 02’ 2.5rs auto. 4door. Its a NICE car, she got a hell of a feal($7k out the door). VERY dependable, VERY good in the snow and lots of room(maybe becouse its 4 door). Its an auto which sucks but o well.
I was looking at svx’s but there WAY to much for what they are and the miles on them
