Taking a bike trip.

see map here…

Finally getting a break from school in August, so I took a week off from work, gonna do some touring on the Buell.

Day 1 is out Rt2 to Fitchburg, MA where I’ll meet up with a couple friends and then riding up through NH to Lincoln, NH which we’ll be staying for 2 nights at.

Day 2 is riding the Kancamugus Highway, and up to the summit of Mt. Washington. Time permitting, maybe the Kanc again before heading back to the hotel

Day 3 is riding west on 302 out through VT and picking up VT17 till it meets Rt7 where my friends will be heading home from. From there, I will head up through the Grand Isle chain of islands in Lake Champlain, crossing into Canada and heading up to stay in Montreal for the night.

Day 4 I’ll ride south again, picking up NY22 at the border crossing just north of Mooers, NY. One of the major things I wanted to do on this trip was to ride the length of NY22 which goes from the border to its intersection with US1 in Bronx, NY I’ll be staying at my sisters near Poughkeepsie, NY at the end of Day 4

Day 5 I’ll finish up the southern end of NY22 before heading down through NYC, along FDR drive and stopping to visit the 9/11 memorial. I’ve been down right after the towers fell, but haven’t been to the site since the memorial has been built. From there, I’ll exit Manhattan via the Lincoln tunnel and into West New York, NJ where I’ll ride on part of the planned F1 track, then follow the river north till I pick up the palisades parkway near the GWB. I’ll ride the length of the palisades to the end where I’ll pick up 9W and follow it north to my friends house in Kingston, NY. If our schedules align, I might stop along that route in Newburgh to visit a buddy that works at OCC as well.

Final day 6 I’ll continue up 9W to Albany, then home.

Should be a good mix of scenic roads at a fairly relaxed pace. My longest day is Day 4, which I think is around 320 miles.

Looks like a well planned trip. Where are you gonna carry all your stuff? Don’t tell me you are putting them on your Buell’s “rear seat” :rofl

i got a set of soft luggage (panniers and tailbag) that I’ll use. Ill post pics when i get it mounted up. I hate luggage, but figure its necessary sometimes:lol

definitely traveling light anyway. I can do laundry at a couple of the stops, that will help

A: ) I’m jealous
B: ) Beware of the boarder crossing, it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours. Ya never know.
C: )Rain plan? Pre-trip Maintenance? Breakdown kit?

Stay safe brother.

b) yeah, I’ve been up there a bunch of times. The 2 crossings I’m using are not the main one on 87, and I have a passport so it should go smoothly.

c) no real rain plan, If all goes according to schedule I’ll be home on August 15, and don’t need to be back to work until the 20th, so if needed I’ll wait out any major storms. As far as a breakdown kit, I’ll carry a little more than a basic set of tools, but not really any spares. I’m pretty handy, and my bike is reliable enough I think it should do the 1200 miles with no issues.

thanks homie.

Back at work after my trip. I was gone from the 10th through the 15th and it was amazing.

Day 1 was very rainy coming through North Adams on Rt2. Once I got past there it dried out for the most part. Met up with my friends in Fitchburg (SV650, GS500E, ZX11) then headed North to Lincoln where we would stay for 2 nights. We came though some VERY heavy rain just as the day was ending, I got a little wet despite my rain gear but my sidi adventures at least kept my feet bone dry.

Heres a pic of my bike in touring mode…

Day2 we rode the Kancamugus Highway (fast road, epic views, a little traffic) and Bear Notch Rd (twisty) on our way up to Mt. Washington where we rode to the summit. Excellent weather on the mountain and not too much traffic. We took 302 west through Crawford Notch and then 93 south through the Franconia Notch back to the hotel. It just started to rain when we got back, so the weather ended up being perfect for us. Very fun day.

Day3 we left Lincoln and headed west on Rt112 and 302 making our way over to Rt17 in VT. amazing scenery, and Rt17 (Appalachian Gap) was nuts. Once we got West of the gap, my friends split off and headed home, and I headed North on VT7 through burlington, then RT2 up through the Grand Isle chain through Lake Champlain and into Canada. I took back roads through farmlands to Montreal where I spent the night.

Day4 I got up early and rode through downtown Montreal before heading south again for the border. I gotta say, I’ve been to Montreal a bunch of times for the races, and I still get lost on their messed up highways and construction detours. Either way, I was crossing the border near Mooers, NY at 9am, which is the beginning of NY22. One goal of this trip was to ride the length of 22, which runs from the Canadian border to the intersection with US1 in Bronx, NY. What an amazing road. Minimal police, no traffic, and long fast sweepers means you can easily maintain 80mph comfortably. I rode about 340 miles from Montreal to my sisters house near Poughkeepsie where I spent the night. This was probably my favorite day on the trip.

Day5 I left my sisters and headed south on 22 again to its terminus in the Bronx. some really fun roads along the way, twisting around some of the reservoirs that are downstate. Once I got to the end, I headed across the tri-boro/kennedy bridge to Manhattan and rode down FDR drive, under the brooklyn bridge and battery park underpass coming out on the west side right next to the Freedom Tower. I ended up not going to the WTC memorial because parking the bike down there was a pain with all my gear. I did end up meeting a friend of mine at Grand Central Terminal for lunch (she works across the street). Parking was kind of a pain, no garages take bikes down there so I ended up parking on the street next to GCT. There was a few bikes parked in the same spot, so i grabbed my cameras out of my bags and left it. No issues there.
After lunch I headed back across town and took the west side highway north and across the GWB. I had planned on using the lincoln tunnel, but by that time I was so sick of the city traffic I just wanted to get out. I took the Palisades parkway north to its end at bear mountain, then 9W north to Kingston where I would spend the night at a friends house. Another epic road, 9W over West Point was friggen amazing.

Day6 was just a short hop north on 9W to Albany. nice road, not a bad alternative to 87.

ended up around 1,350 miles total. No issues with the bike, my new seat was great. I had an amazing time, and definitely looking forward to more trips like this in the future.

Very nice trip. I really hate riding in the rain, so I would have been miserable it seems for a lot of that trip, ha. What’s the list you have taped to the tank in a few pics? Directions?

Awesome… GoPro? Love to hear such a long trip and the least that went wrong was rain. You should look into…

I only have my “SaddleSore” from when I had my Dakar 1150GS (RIP)

yes, I had printed out each days turn by turn (just basic) directions and used packing tape to put it on the tank each morning.

yeah, just got the gopro so i didnt get much good video. Actually the sound wasnt working anyway, waiting to hear back from tech support.

ironbutt is too much for me on the Buell I think. :crackup

Looks like it was a great trip! I need to check out the App Gap sometime!!

9W is pretty sweet. I ride it between Nyack and Newburgh all the time.

Wow, nice trip. So nice to have time off like that for a bike trip…

Very cool trip. + repped

awesome trip duuuude

looked like a great time bro! We def have to go for a few trips once im back next month

I am VERY happy to hear your Sidi adventure boots kept your feet dry. I have been waiting to hear a review on them.

You got lucky. I have attempted Mt Washington twice and the road was closed both times due to high winds.

I like it :tbu

It is great to hear you accomplished your goal of riding Rt #22 from end to end. I have ridden only part of it from around Whitehall to where it connects to route #11 but then I headed west to Malone and down Rt #30.No New York city riding for me I avoid all big cities even if it means taking the long way around them.

I would rather contend with a critter or two dashing out across my path than to deal with several lanes of idiots all trying to kill me.

What’s next?

I kind of enjoyed riding in the big cities. Everyone gave me lots of space.

Funny you mentioned 30, I think I’d like to ride the length of that some day too. I think next years bike trip will be more NY based. gonna have my friends I rode with in NH come out for a weekend or something.

I have ridden south as far as the Pepacton Reservoir on Rt #30. It is a pleasant ride with lots of long sweepers and wonderful scenic views.

Yeah I’ve done the catskills portion a bunch and liked it.
