I hate to admit it but I agree with Newman no matter how gay of a lifestyle he leads. If your allowed to have gun then you are allowed to have them. Was every gun owner in Canada informed that they were not allowed to transport their guns near the G20 site?
It’s just that right now both your and the government’s definition of “reasonable” is congruent. What if they depart?
What if the guy with the pellet guns that you can buy at 16 years old gets ten years because he took a wrong turn?
Jay i hope someone decides that your taxes should increase so that the state can fund a useless world summit around the corner from your home that requires them to erect a fence that happens to encompass your home and all of the places you go to reguarly and they make you ‘show your papers’ (see: holocaust) if you want to enter or exit the area while retaining the right to detain you without warrant based on the suspicion of an under-trained, over-paid person wearing a badge that cannot find gainful employment elsewhere so he does the state’s bidding for money.
Oh, and don’t get angry about it… you’re not allowed to… especially if you have a stupid hat
People always approach these arguments the same way… by starting with the assumption that the rights they have are absolute. Most people learned early on that they’re not. You have a right to free speech, but can’t yell fire in a crowded theater or bomb on an airplane. You have a right to freedom of religion, but if your religion preaches violence and anarchy expect a visit from the FBI like Waco, TX. Or taking one out of today’s news, you have a right to keep and bare arms (praise be upon the 5 conservative members of the US Supreme Court). However you’re still not going to get inside the downtown federal courthouse while carrying that weapon you have a right to keep and bare.
How are any of these exceptions different? Do you feel they are also a blatant assault on your rights?
I believe, like many things, it comes down to simple respect, common sense and good judgement. None of which the officers showed.
No one likes a power tripping human being, just like they can’t respect an arm chair critic who can criticize anything and everything without ever having to be in the position to be effected by it.
Live in your bubble. Nothing affects you in your middle class neighborhood. We get it.
And unless you have been involved in such a situation in the past why not just see yourself out of this thread because you obviously have no experience being in that position, so you have no place to talk or judge.
That’s what courts are for. If it turns out it was all an innocent misunderstanding I’m sure the guy will be fine. But, he didn’t just have a pellet gun now did he? He had crossbows, multiple gasoline cans and some large jugs with yet unidentified chemicals. And worst of all he had no explanation and seemed disoriented when asked about it. Breaking News - Headlines & Top Stories | The Star
Does he deserve 10 years? Who knows based on what we know from the press. That’s for the courts to figure out.
No, I’d be pissed if they spent almost a billion dollars of my tax money on it and I can’t fault anyone for complaining about that. I wasn’t real happy when I saw how much it cost us to have Obama make his 3 hour trip to Buffalo. But you have to admit if that’s your main concern that posting videos showing exactly why they had to spend so much on security probably wasn’t a great plan.
And I thought you guys were joking when you said a billion, but here it is. 930 million.
^ That part right there would be the part I’d be pissed about. Having to show ID to go inside the secure sector… not a problem. Picking up that tab for an event that had no real positive for the region… big problem.
$930 Million in G20 costs for Toronto
$12 Million in G20 costs for Pittsburgh
A decent article comparing and contrasting the two meetings, mainly that this was the first to combine a G8 and G20; http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/torontog20summit/article/828308--g20-canada-s-billion-dollar-summit-mystery
But it still doesn’t all add up.
Bump this thread when your Federal Auditor-General releases her report.
Ah yeah, curse my ability to fly under the radar of local law enforcement by not doing stupid shit. Maybe if I had more posts looking for lawyers my opinions would hold more weight for you? Are the only people allowed to have opinions on law in your world felons, or is just having multiple confrontations with law enforcement without a conviction provide an ample resume?
There has been only one serious run in with law enforcement in my past. When I was 15 living at home in a very small town a few friends and I were chased off a guy’s property for stealing apples from his tree. Scary stuff I know. Two days later a barn he owned burned to the ground in an apparent arson. Since it’s a small town where everyone knows everyone the cops immediately started looking at us since we had recently had contact with the owner. I guess being chased away for stealing apples was motive for major arson in their books. Nothing came of it because like myself, my family are educated people. A very brief interview was granted to the state police detective where all that was stated was, “no, I didn’t do it, and this is what I was doing at the time. Any further questions can be directed to our lawyer”. A few weeks later an arrest was made and the guy admitted torching the place.
And really, what does an innocent person being randomly harassed by police have to with this thread anyway? These certainly aren’t random encounters. The guy I commented on with the sun glasses purposely went down there to see how far he could push an issue with the police. That’s about as random an encounter as Steve Irwin being killed by a wild animal.
Your ability to fly under the radar has nothing to do with the fact that you are the first one to sit back on constantly criticize, anyone, anything, or any way of thought that does not match your version of what is right. Anyone can waste a companies salary all day searching the internet and citing articles to back up arguments and situations that effect you in 0 way. For an educated guy, you waste a lot of intelligence.
Second, I am not felon, I got a speeding ticket. However I am a honest business man who has been accused and interrogated, not with mommy and daddy watching my ass, but by several officers in an interrogation room on tape all that shit for things that had absolutely nothing to do with me. However, even with being honest and truthful and allowing full search of my premises and WILLFULLY offering a polygraph I was still held against my will for hours. Again. For a circumstances that had nothing to do with me.
Try telling that to cops who are just looking for someone to pin things on. You have no fucking clue. Suck my dick you fat fucking loser. Do some fucking work and stop leaching off of your employer all day.
Plain and simple, it boils down to you’re an impotent asshole. No power to see a better change, all you do is criticize everything.
Wow, and now it degenerates to name calling.
Funny that the same guy who in another thread told me how he likes to look at all opinions to base his ideals on so quickly and adamantly dismisses mine.
I’ll admit, I spent a unusually large amount of time on here today. I also spent an unusually large amount of time sitting on hold on phone calls from support people today so the there is definitely a link there.
I don’t know the details of the legal issues you’re talking about, nor do I really care to. I will say that as an adult I’d be smart enough to demand to be charged, released or speak to my attorney if I was being interrogated by police I felt were trying to “pin something on me”. I certainly won’t apologize for being 15 and having parents smart enough to stand up for me but I will say by the time I was your age I was smart enough not to need to hide behind them anyway. Hopefully you can recover from the events that took place with law enforcement and government agencies in your past because it seems to bring you a lot of unnecessary anger, distrust and anxiety.
Yeah, no shit. Again you have no clue.
You can ask all you want. Threats get made. lawyers get called, nothing gets done, lots of time and money wasted.
If you have never been in the situation yourself stop pretending like “oh if he’s innocent it’ll all be ok”…Yeah, at what toll. You are clueless in this realm. So don’t try to criticize the people who have had their rights taken away, who have been violated, who have been treated like animals for NOTHING if you yourself have not been in the situation.
Go back to your tech calls.
This I find amusing. Seems the majority is quick to bash the police. It also seems that most are quick to assume that those in uniform are either stupid or lack motivation. While you have your assholes in uniform, there are also those that put there lives on the line for the public. My question to you is, what would society do without police to deter the non-law abiding people?
The G20 event needed to be secure. It sucks that it came with inconvenience for those that reside or travel within the area of the event. Life is chock full of things that aren’t fair or convenient. You cannot appease everyone.
No, I realize truly innocent people do get railroaded. The majority of the time bad legal decisions on their part had a lot to do with it but that’s still no excuse for police to get a pass either.
Again though, what does this have to do with the discussion at hand? The officers providing a security barricade around the summit weren’t randomly selecting people. People were purposely approaching the secure area for their various reasons and instigating the interaction with police. It’s not like police harassing a local small business owner over a crime he apparently has nothing to do with.
Don, Jay, i dont hate either one of you… you’re both stand up guys as far as i am concerned.
however, on any particular day, and for that day only, the one that agrees with me is cool and the one that doesnt is a total fag.
This G20 was a total fucking mess. No hate on the po-po, they are just doing their job… although they should stop being fags and go get better jobs.
The problem is that our taxes are going up to fund this and other fuckery and that a bunch of smashed windows and police cars on fire to me seems like a perfectly reasonable response.
I wasnt there, but if i were single and 5 years younger i would have been and i would have been right at teh leading edge of what went on there.
i don’t think the police had as much of a problem with the pellet gun as a there also being a crossbow and tanks of gasoline. those are some pretty serious things to have around a summit of all the world leaders. of course for security reasons the man has been arrested. I really think everyone has to stop complaining about their rights being revoked i mean what was that guy whining about rights doing anywhere in that area if he had a problem about showing his ID. they have people doing violent protest going on they need to be so strict as far as security.
Yeah man, like I said before this went completely sideways… 930 million is just unacceptable. Any idea how many of the protesters were there for that reason though?
Securing something, doing security and police work is understandable. Being disrespectful, aggressive and abusing your power is something else. The second video I watched that bing posted pissed me off. Really, is that a reasonable response? Those riot police should have used better judgement, instead of jumping in their power suits and just looking for a reason to use their new toys.
i think the situation may have been a bit different there though. If those people wanted in they could have charged the police and would have made it pretty far but injuries would be high.
