The legislation, which would send tax credits of $500 per worker and $1,000 per couple, expressly disqualifies nonresident aliens, but it would allow people who don’t have Social Security numbers to be eligible for the checks.
Undocumented immigrants who are not eligible for a Social Security number can file tax returns with an alternative number. A House-passed version of the economic recovery bill and one making its way through the Senate would allow anyone with such a number, called an individual taxpayer identification number, to qualify for the tax credits.
Great, we are in a financial crisis and we want to give $10 billion to people from other countires. Brilliant!
You voted for these people.
What is $500 to a typical American, especially given inflated prices? It’s nothing and will do nothing for the economy. I don’t care if they give every child, illegal and household pet $500, it won’t fix anything. They can continue to avoid a free market and natural ebb & flow of the economy but it’s going to end ugly. They need to let things get bad enough and cheap enough here that companies will begin to open up and manufacture again creating jobs and goods. Then we can recoup some jobs that were sent overseas thanks to unions bloating wages and other corportate greed tactics. A consumer nation with high wage workers is not fundamentally sound! And now their solution is to hire everybody to guard the borders and airports at high wages. Yeah…that’s gonna prove useful fundamentally right? :banghead:
They allowed a lending bubble of epic proportions and then wait till 40% of the markets value was lost to do something? It’s all a joke and while I don’t believe in the Amero type conspiracy stuff, there has to be a reason for such buffoonery. The irony is IMO 7500-8000 on the DOW would have been supported and may have capped things. Now we have further damage in terms of the money supply and overwhelming confidence damage. Companies are continuing to hit the “oh shit” button laying off more future default/foreclosure victims. The overall sentiment is “terrified” from companies, investors and citizens alike. I’m not even sure what to think now…the bailout bullshit is damning! Instead of a bear cycle flush leading to a rebuild we may just consolidate in a wild volatile range for many years to come, leaving people afraid to pick a side. Companies are less likely to open usefull prodution jobs because the costs of doing biz have been kept high artificialy.
:mamoru: Don’t you love how this post was skipped over?
I read the summary and skimmed the full text of the bill. I was impressed that there was no wool research, race track, or wooden arrow type bullshit. Is this a result of one party controlling the senate and house? I thought the other bill was full of unrelated crap because one party would’nt vote for the other party’s bill unless they got something out of it…
The content surprised me a bit. The way everyone is talking, I thought it was the same thing as the last bailout, just bigger. Turns out it’s nothing like the last one where we spent $350 billion nationalizing banks (not that that’s what the law stated was to be done, but I digress.)
1 SEC. 2. TABLE OF CONTENTS. 2 The table of contents for this Act is as follows:
TITLE I—GENERAL PROVISIONS
TITLE II—AGRICULTURE, NUTRITION, AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT
TITLE III—COMMERCE, JUSTICE, AND SCIENCE
TITLE IV—DEFENSE
TITLE V—ENERGY AND WATER
TITLE VI—FINANCIAL SERVICES AND GENERAL GOVERNMENT
TITLE VII—HOMELAND SECURITY
TITLE VIII—INTERIOR AND ENVIRONMENT
TITLE IX—LABOR, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, AND EDUCATION
TITLE X—MILITARY CONSTRUCTION AND VETERANS AFFAIRS
TITLE XI—DEPARTMENT OF STATE
TITLE XII—TRANSPORTATION, AND HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT
TITLE XIII—STATE FISCAL STABILIZATION FUND
It looks like the intention isn’t to absorb more failures, but to stimulate the economy via government spending. Except for Title 13. That looks like a state bailout. I’m going to go read that text…
Ok I just saw on tv that some want a 15K credit for buying a home in 09. Sorry if this topic has been covered yet as I havent been following this thread much but…any info?
Im going to read the summary now or tonight after work.
Perhaps because they are here illegally and have NO BUISNESS being here. I am all for immigration, but do it the legal way, learn English, and pay taxes. If you are not a LEGAL citizen, you should have absolutely no right to anything a LEGAL citizen gets.
$600 Million to Buy New Cars for Government Workers
$335 Million for STD Education and Prevention
$50 Million for the National Endowment for the Arts
This doesn’t sound like it will “stimulate” the economy to me :gotme:.
It won’t actually, because there is such a current surplus of vehicles, that all they will do is buy up the ones sitting in lots. With the economy being down, those vehicles will not be replaced, because there is no demand, so people won’t be hired. So how is that putting people back to work?
Thats how I see it. They wont crank out new cars, just sell the ones they have that aren’t sold yet. It costs so much for these companies to run that 600,000,000 is really not going to get them very far.
The best thing the government can do is say fuck all these bullshit ideas and put the money into infrastructure. Roads, bridges yada yada. We desperately need them and it will provide thousands and thousands of jobs. We also need to rebuild the railroad system. It is much more efficient than trucking, and will create thousands more jobs.
hmm…yeah you really are pretty clueless aren’t you? Do you have any idea how much it costs for the big 3 just to stay in business? 600mill is a fraction of what they spend. I don’t see why we need an extra $335 million in std education, people aren’t going to be like “wow if only I knew what an std was”. It comes down to personal responsibility. No amount of money will make an idiot not do something stupid. And 50 mill for the arts? c’mon nowwww. We are in a financial crisis and instead fo spending money in ways that will actually make a difference and create thousands of well paying jobs, and help to fix this country, we are putting it into things that arent really relevant. Its like if you blow the engine in your car, you have very little money, and you get enough to fix your engine, which is what NEEDS to be done, instead you blow the money on getting a new paint job and upgrading your brakes. Well guess what…with no engine that stuff means absolutely dick.
Seriously. Do you people even fucking think about what you say? “Well I bet there are $600 million dollars worth of cars sitting on lots that there is absolutely no market for except for purchase by the federal government, so there will be no increased demand for new cars because those cars are already built.”
“$600 million dollars isn’t enough to completely save them so it’s not worth doing.” IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY “Where I come from when times are tough you only spend what you need to spend to get by.”
HOLY FUCKING SHIT HOW DO YOU PEOPLE REMEMBER TO BREATHE?
the problem is they are in the situation due to bad buisness practices. It costs a rediculous amount of money for said companies to stay in buisness, so you are not doing anything but prolonging the unavoidable. I know what you mean, yes it will help the companies, but it will not keep people employed longer. If we take this money and put it into infrastructure repair, you now creat thousands and thousands of jobs, as well as improve the roads, bridges etc, that despirately need to be done.
