I really fucking hate that I date memories like this.
That makes WAY more sense. I was like I can has math durp blup blop $40+k lol. I have a car to sell you homie! lol.
@JayS I’m glad the cars are in good shape. I’ll stick my 2006 Grand Marquis when I’m not in a company car. She almost has 35K miles now haha. I’d love something new, but man, prices are nuts.
Spending $100K on a new car seems like such a stretch to me. A friend recently showed me a new M3, I priced one out how I’d want it and it was right at $95K. I told him I’d rather have a E30 M3, E36 M3 AND an E46 M3 instead lol.
Just paid off the Atlas a few months early. Only saved me like $7 in interest, but its nice starting the year without a payment. Of course since we drive so much (thanks competitive sports) we put 95k on it in 5 years. But I figure we’ll put 200k on it before its done.
GTI was paid off in 2019. Currently at 145k miles and its basically like new still. Going to do the timing shit my self in spring and hopefully put another 65k at least on it.
So just down to the kids Golf, which she pays half of. So im down to $130/mo total.
MUCH nicer than almost $780/mo.
The truck I’m in right now is 5 months old and has 12K miles on it haha. Daughter in Swim, dance, basketball, plus visiting family in other states really hits the odometer.
Yea, we did something like 24k the first year and 22k the 2nd, mostly for dance (my poor CC those years). Covid really backed down the miles else we’d be WELL north of 100k.
I’m so happy that my wife and I have no kids lol, we are “DINKs” (just learned that a few months ago). I drive 10 miles to work and she works from home two days a week so our mileage is super low. Once these are paid off it’s just a matter of maintenance and they should last us a while. I’m trying to avoid a car payment/going to a hybrid/electric BS car for as long as possible.
How do you like the Atlas? I loved my CC and love the Audi. Just something about how solidly built VAG cars feel/drive etc. The Atlas is on my short list of replacements for the Enclave, along with the Audi Q7 but I don’t think I want to spend that kind of money.
We have the SEL 4-motion VR6.
Its been great honestly. The only issue we had was the water pump recall (and a subsequent small leak), and one of the HVAC door motors squeaking.
I just did the brakes at 90k.
Basically its just been tires and oil changes.
EDIT: Not counting mods ive spent $2375 on maintenance in almost 5yrs. Basically tires, oil changes, wiper blades, and the brakes.
Gas mileage sucks, maybe 20 ish. 22 ish on a long highway trip. But I dont really pay much attention.
The fit and finish isnt amazing. Lets be honest it was built as a car just for the standard US family. The only other place they are sold is China (Teramont).
The drivers seat bottom bolster has developed a crack in the “leatherette”. Probably from my wife sliding out everyday.
I figure it will easy get us to 200k. Hell ive never owned a VR6 VW that didnt get me to at least 200k.
That said I would likely get back into an Audi next for the wife. Prob a Q5. We really dont need to extra room for travelling anymore now that the kid is in college.
Kids are the most amazing thing ever. I’d trade all my racecars for kids if I had to.
If I wasn’t a teacher, I would see that completely. But I get to be a father figure to 120+ inner city kids every day. The last thing I want is to keep doing that role when I get home. I get home and enjoy being a husband and that’s it. It’s really nice lol.
The last month with the kid home from school was def not as enjoyable as when it was just the two of us home. lol
Mostly b/c she complains “theres nothing to eat”
I hate car payments. I have not had one since ~2010.
BUT, I really need to replace my POS Envoy.
It did survive barely towing a camper for 7 or 8 years.
The best part was going to Alleghany and going from 65 to 40 uphill on the 219.
If I had 150k laying around, that Escalade V would be sweet.
I also cannot stomach paying 80k for a Tahoe that will follow all my GM cars and just rot away.
You’re not alone man, I share the exact same thoughts. Maybe not playing quite the same role to my students but there’s still much “parenting” to do. Having kids would essentially put us to work 24/7.
No way… You would start losing interest in your own when the kids get older and start rebelling.
Then it’s back to summers off
If you had it before the pandemic, keep it as long as you can
Is this a gay bar joke?
I believe @JayS and I tussled on this a few years ago with the Model S.
I only wish we had 500+ mile range EVs in that time
There are fewer moving parts on EV vehicles than gas-burning cars, which means there are fewer failure points on components that can make for costly replacements.
Additionally, the less time a vehicle is receiving repairs at the auto shop means it’s spending more time on the road and thus has more opportunities to make money as a rental.
Last time I was on work travel in San Francisco, Tesla’s were an option.
Profits probably exploded because they were around $200/day vs my usual rate of $38/day.
There were charging stations all over SF as well. I cannot imagine what they ‘charge you’ when you bring one back at 50%.
I try explaining this to all the boomers i work with and they dont get it. Ill probably literally never do new brakes or rotors on my wifes tesla. It does like to eat tires though
