that’s because it’s hard as hell to do anything with. If they make it easier to work with a lot of people including myself will make the switch, but they have a lot of work to do still before that will happen.
linux is opensource for christ’s sake.
wtf are you talking abot
ever use redhat ES?
wait until you see it bundled with ultra-cheap home PCs in a mass-market retail setting. you sell the public on a product through innovation, marketing, or price. because of the “business model”, you can’t aggressively market linux. so no one other than the geeks will notice the innovation until it’s sold to them through low price and massive availability.
Um, Walmart already has that:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3380786
runs:
I don’t know anyone that actually has one.
the average home user who wants to plug it in and be able to do anything they want to cannot do that, even with redhat. It’s just not as easy as windows, yet.
it’s getting better, but not even close to windows
“Anybody who’s got good computer science training, they are not out there unemployed,” Gates said. “We’re just not seeing an available labor pool.”
read this quote out of the article… its soooooo true… if you are good at your field you have A FUCKING JOB!!! who cares if foreigners come in, if they are smarter then me then they deserve my job… hell they took the time to learn our language enough to get the job… well yeah they are better then me
Sorry to keep picking on you, I swear I’m not since I have no beef with Macs, but their market share is nothing:
http://www.macobserver.com/article/2004/10/29.6.shtml
“No other PC vendor in the top ten posted a decline in year-to-year unit growth worldwide but Apple.”
Seems like the only thing that is keeping them in the black is the ipod.
It’s a shame, really, because it’s not really a big deal to the majority of end users - they can sit down at a Mac or a Linux machine and still click and get on the internet or send an email.
People fear change, so Microsoft is not going to go out of business over night with free software. Anyone use Sun’s Star office? Probably not…
Plus, guess what. Since Firefox and Mozilla have gotten more and more popular you can find all sorts of vulnerabilities and it’s going to get worse.
You can’t you get open VMS for free? It’s the most secure os based on the number of vulnerablilites but I doubt there will ever be a huge rush for people (like me) who can speak a little DCL!!
fuck ipods they are WAY overrated.
MAC Windows Linus Gates Computers blah blah blah

If they want to immigrate, pay taxes and pay for food, clothing and shelter here that’s one thing. What happens a lot is engineers come over here as consultants, work for next to nothing because it’s still better than what they make in their own country, and send the money back to their home. Czechoslovakia seems to be a popular place for this.
I can’t believe… you of all people would say that…
We just started interviewing folks in India for some IT positions… I know there are people out there that would be happy with an IT helpdesk analyst position to feed their families… but it is “smarter” to send these jobs to India… because we only have to pay them $.25 an hour to work as oppossed to what the US folks need to make.
Our jobs here will be eliminated if Bill Gates ets his way. No US company should be starving their own and giving money away to others…
money is just a big fucking headache.
need to go back to the bartering mochasin days !
ok, whats the problem here? he wants to hire more “trained” or “knowledgeable” people. Yet he has to source them from outside the country…
So how is anyone losing a job? There are peopel not getting jobs, but they are obviously not qualified. Then i see smart foreign labor-- you know they are not working for min wage… So where is the beef?
oh yeah, if anything, countries should eb pissed b/c we are stealing their “smart” people.
Are you serious? They are handing our jobs to foreigners… who are paid less than us. Instead of handing that job over… maybe Bill Gates should donate some training.
Bringing people into the country is not nearly as bad as sending jobs to other countries. The folks in the other countries will work for peanuts and rice so our corporations are all jumping on it, leaving folks here … willing to work and be trained… without jobs or flippin burgers for a living.
Have you ever talked to a support person in India? Probably not, because you certainly would not be calling them smart.
where does it say he is hiring support people? shit, college kids get those jobs…
it sounds to me he is trying to get programmers and the like.
You don’t think there are programmers in the USA that would like a job?
