GM = General Tso's Motors

This is an interesting opinion piece in the WSJ today about GM’s moves in China:

GM China President Bob Socia says that Americans “could very well” soon find Chinese-made GM cars on showroom floors. “There is no reason why we can’t be exporting to the [United] States,” he told a reporter for the website Autoblog at the Shanghai Auto Show.

… GM is becoming the new face of Chinese-made cars. If GM’s executives think the bailout made the company a political football, wait till they see what happens when American car buyers start finding “Made in China” tags on Chevrolets and Cadillacs.

For those people who actually still care about where a car is made (for whatever reason) when they make a purchase, this might be something to watch.

 to taxpayer funded bailouts so a company can take their jobs to China.

aint that some shit

that’s the way it should be.

if they can make the same or better product for significantly less money then it will happen. heck they already make more complicating stuff anyways.

we’ll just have to hope for hyper-inflation over there that equalizes their pay structures…

I just find it SUPER ironic that Japenese car companies are now building cars in the US, and US car companies are considering building their cars in China.

I really dislike outsourcing, though. Guarantee the Chinese will steal the design.

Production cost = (HIGH) Japan > US > China (LOW)

The Japanese are in Tennessee and other US states because it’s cheaper than Japan. But since the Japanese & the Chinese are not exactly best of friends we won’t see them shift production to China. So GM can go to China to get a leg-up on the Chinese.

Our current system essentially encourages this behavior.

The only solution is the violent overthrow of the ruling bourgeoisie by the working proletariat, with the equitable redistribution of land, wealth, and the means of production.

lol

if americans didn’t have a foot up their ass and expect 30-40$/h to put a bolt in a door hinge on an assembly line… maybe they’d still have their jobs… lol

anyways, who buys american cars?

Didn’t the last Equinox have a V6 made in China?

this is true once you factor in transport and tariff related costs… i’m sure the price x quality is still better off the line in Japan than it is over here.

Not when you’re bailed out by the taxpayers of the US. This is garbage.

Lol…this nation is doomed. Largely uneducated population with manual labor jobs being eliminated at every turn.

I hate it and I would not consider a GM product made in China. Part of the reason I buy American, besides the fact that I like V8’s and torque, is because they actually pay Americans a living wage. Import companies may be “Made in USA” but they pay $10 an hour with no benefits in red states. This would make me re-evaluate that.

Third-world manufacturing is really just a stopgap until it’s all done by robots anyway. Once that’s the case, with labor costs significantly reduced it makes sense to just make big stuff in the market it’s going to be sold, to save on shipping.

Looks like I’ll just continue buying my american made Hondas heh.

+1 for Honda NA

If it was THEIR capital and not the TAX PAYERS spending power I would agree with you. They went belly up & fucked over long term shareholders, asked for US bailout funds and then came out with $20+BILLION in new shares which they are now investing overseas as a thank you to America? Fuck GM!

brought that fact up with my inlaws, driving all their fords made anywhere but the US… they’re all stamping plant blood.

I’d be interested in seeing the American made parts content on your Hondas vs. a GM or Ford. Paying some monkey in Alabama $10 an hour to screw a bunch of Japanese parts together at the final step, while the profits go right overseas, does not make a car American in my book. GM and Ford are getting worse with the parts too but they buy a lot more stuff from American subs like Delphi.

Where are you getting this $10/hr figure? Maybe $10/hr LESS than comparable union labor, but I can’t find anyone working in production or assembly making $10/hr. Maybe I just haven’t looked hard enough?
