This is not the DROID you are looking for.......move along

Yeah, I don’t see it as too far off either. Hell, someone might right something that can already do it as an app.

How much space do you think you’d need to have a full fledged map software on your phone? 100mb? 200mb?

Close enough :lol

I’m sure its not a case of not being able to fit the actual maps into the memory of a phone, more so the issue of the added cost of doing it compared to keeping all of the maps in a central database that people access when needed.

Course a system like Googles navi has got to require massive amounts of memory with all the different map views and settings it has possible, so its prob a combination of both?

Would be cool if you could download your route that you have planned so its all there on your phone in case you lose signal somewhere along the way. (assuming that this isn’t already possible.)

That’s actually a good idea. It should be very much possible.

the maps do actually take up a ton of space and on top of that it requires a decent amount of computing power to do the calcuations to find the route. I think thats one of the key things right now is that those calcuations are not being done by your phone’s processor but by google’s or sprint’s somewhere else which again requires the data connection.

I think I heard about that route thing…I forget what device it was for though, but I remember hearing/reading that you can download your route to said device.

Just pre-ordered at BB, device in hand on Friday.

Ill have 2 verizon android devices to play with come friday :excited

I <3 my boss

i also pick mine up fri morning

Actually, I just realized there is a separate GPS sensor in the phone. The way the Droid navigates is through wifi/cell signal and/or GPS sensor. I believe iphone is also like that.
