time for a new computer. taking recommendations

looking to spend no more than $800

build one and mesh it with your new parts. thats what i did. if you really only need a motherboard and chip, it can be had for under $300

are celeron processors decent? All i really use this damn thing for is porn, pittspeed and music.

my computer is pretty busted. probably about 6 years old. Dell P3 450. 13GB HD + a 40GB HD I installed. originally 96MB RAM upgraded by me to 224MB. Plus this thing is so riddled with viruses and shit that I just want to throw it out the fucking window. So I’d have to spend $300 on a motherboard, then more on more RAM, then $150 on Windows XP Pro. Thats like $600 right there, and for that I could get a new Dell. :dunno:

Tigerdirect.com has some good Sempron equipped PC’s.

AMD Athlon with DVD Burner:

Costs a little more, but specs out nice…

not too shabby. I was hoping for something with XP Pro though. Other than that and the price, not too shabby.

what do you all think about this?

you can always upgrade to XP pro

I would get an Athlon 64 vs. the XP. And go for at least 1 gig of ram. You’ll do better down the road. I just built a Athlon 64 3400+ w/ 1 gig of ram, 360 gigs of hard drive. Got everything but the video card and software for around $700. Took several months to assemble it all watching for specials on parts. Got a lot of stuff on Black Friday last year.

I just built my new Athlon 64 with 1 gig of ram

it flies

Honey… it was more than $800

You’re typing on your 350HO… :moon:

it won’t be when you send in the rebates

Dont buy the full version of XP no matter what… save yourself the $60 and get the upgrade of XP Pro for $90… when it doesnt find a OS on ur computer, just pop in a win98 disk and it will allow you to install it… its essentially the same disk as the full version…
Yes celerons are good processors… not quite P4s… but good… Semprons are junk… dont bother… if you want AMD go w/ an Athlon or even go older and grab a 1.8 GHz Duron… the Durons aren’t made anymore and 1.8 is the very fastest… but Durons were beasts… they were supposed to be lower than an Athlon XP, but they ran like hell… and right now, you can get a Duron 1.8 on tigerdirect for $30… good deal

I just built my bro a brand new one w/ a 2.8Ghz Celeron D processor for $150… that included 512 MB DDR-Ram and all the other shit he needed… all you need to do is use your 40GB hard drive (even keep your 13 Gigger for a second drive) … if you want, lemme know, i’ll look and post up the link to the parts…
There are so many options to build one for really really cheap as long as you’re not looking to get the very newest and fastest… that 2.8 runs awesome! and if you’re willing to spend like $20 more, you can up that to 1024 MB ram…

millions of different combos for under $200… just takes a little patience and a few hours… and you have yourself a brand new, screaming fast computer

:bigok:

sounds interesting. Yeah I dont need anything screaming fast. I’d just like to be able to surf the web and run winamp without it bogging down my system. :hs:

I’d be willing to build my own if I could do it for cheaper and its not too complicated.

not too bad i’d say… but most ppl aren’t going to need near that much stuff… 1 GB ram is awesome… but 512 is plenty enough… but no doubt i’d suggest upgrading to that…

360 GB hard drive is definitely way more than you need… i think 40 is plenty enough (as long as you’re not a music, movie, or picture FREAK - burn them on a cd anyhow and delete them from the computer)… I’ve never installed a Athlon 64 before… they are too expensive… but i’m guessing that their price resembles their quality… i jsut have trouble spending that much…

sounds like it’d be an awesome computer tho…

my laptop is a AMD Athlond XP 2400+ Mobile (which runs at like 1.2 GHz, unlike the reg. Athlon xp that runs at 1.8)… and it runs fast as hell, especially considering its not near the clock speed of the new ones… i just don’t feel that you need to spend all that extra money… but that’s the view of poor poor poor ol’ me… if i had the money, i’d prolly spend it on much better stuff too! LOL

yea, its a peice of cake… only takes a few hours to put everythign on it (and thats if you’re inexperienced)… PM me if you need to know anythign really specific
