Tire size question

My car came with 195/55/15.
My new wheels came with 225/50/16.

Not right at all.

Using the tire size calculator, it says 205/45/16 and 215/45/16 will both be almost perfect matches for my original overall diameter… I’d rather go with the 205s for clearance issues, but will that width fit a 7.5" wide wheel?

they will, probably up to a 255

205’s will be slightly wider and I would assume they would fit a 7.5" wide wheel. My 235/60/15’s are mounted on 6" wide wheels

my old wheels were 7.5" wide and i had 215s on them

Tires are not constructed as exactingly as this, but a good rough guide might be:

205 mm is about 8.0 inches / about 0.25 inches of rubber per side of rim
215 mm is about 8.5 inches / about 0.5 inches of rubber per side of rim
225 mm is about 8.8 inches / about 0.65 inches of rubber per side of rim

If your wheel is backspaced inboard toward the suspension or tight to subframe when turning the steering, any of these might work.

For a 205 the average range of rim width is 6.5 - 8 wide. You will be ok.

we put a 285 on an 8.5 wheel and it fit beautifully

I’m going to get 205/45/16 Yokohama Avid H4Ss… $69/tire from TireRack. Thanks for the answers.
