Tires and sizing

The stock tires on my car are 215/45/ZR18

This isn’t the most standard 18" tire, so they are very expensive.

I was looking into a tire calculator and a 225/40/18 (cheaper) will give me a 2% difference in the speedometer.

Do you think it’ll be that big of an issue?

The stock 18" wheel for the MS6 is only 7" wide. A 225 should fit, I’d imagine. I had 225 wide tires on my regular 6, and it also had 7" wide wheels.

Comments?

225s will fit on a 5.5" wide wheel

Sadly, they’ve gotta be 93 rating. Apparently the MS6 has a fat ass…

And you really think that 3% difference in load rating by using a 92 is really going to make a diffence. I highly doubt that you operate anywhere near the GVWR of 4552 lbs. So the real question is how often do you pack your car with 963 lbs of stuff?

yah umm it doesn’t matter…from working at a tire place i hate ppl that think even a 5% change will make a difference…it won’t ! think about how much a tire changes just from burning off the tread! thats about 1/2 inch at least in tread! stock size on my car…275/40/18…on it now…285/35/18…on new rims…315/35/18’s …doesn’t change much maybe 5mph at 60 ? you can either get used to it or pay extra money for a weird stock size…go for the 225/40’s maybe even a 235/40

You work at a tire place and you don’t know that passenger car tire tread depth is molded at 10/32nds? 10/32nds =! 1/2 an inch. Furthermore NYS law recomends 2/32nds so the maxima difference is 8/32nds from new to properly warn. That is a 1/4 deviation, for an OE difference in wheel speed from new to properly worn of 1.978679…%

true but everyone doesn’t stop at 2/32’s either…amd sorry about that i was also including truck tires into my assumption…also there would be a 1/4 loss on top and bottom therefore reducing the overall tire hieght by what ? 8/32’s on top added to 8/32’s on bottom giving you a total loss of 16/32 or 1/2 sorry i reduced it

so, as you two decide to confuse me more with your #/32 talk… I think I got out of it that yes, indeed, I should just go for the 225/40.

I’d love to go 235/40 but they’ll rub.

Thanks for the info.

I have 235/40/18’s on my stock cobalt wheels…they are 7’ wide…I dont see why you couldnt use that size…unless it rubs your inner fender
