We scooped this car up today. It is, for all intent and purposes, a collector car that could be sold anywhere in the world.
In 1994 Subaru began production of the first ever WRX STI Wagon and STI Sedan. That year 100 units of each were scheduled each month to be built. The units sold at such a pace that Subaru planned to run 200 units of each in the latter months still within 1994. The vehicles are all number plated with a plaque hidden inside of the engine bay. The plaque features build month along with the number off the assembly line.
This is number is being confirmed very shortly. Its in the first 100 production run.
Can’t wait until this arrives!
Pictures of the numbered plaque will be posted soon.
I wanted to wait to confirm that we had a number 1. Number 1 built in April '94. One of the first few hundred STi’s ever made (first 100 were in February). Possibly the first STI Wagon ever according to research. We put out a request to Subie Japan to find out more.
We got lucky to get this one before it hit auctions or dealers or private sales.
Our buyer in Japan, Danny, told us about it. It was his friends grandfathers car. Otherwise, as history has shown in places like the UK and Japan, there may have been a bidding war on it.
It is interesting. Finding information on these is hella hard (aside from wiki and the other maybe/maybe maybe not credible sources).
They were all hand built by Subaru Technica International and started the STI we know today.
Ive accounted for about 50 worldwide that have surfaced over the last few years. I assume most reside in some guys garage in Japan.
Right now i’m trying to find out if they did indeed start in February (as rumored) or March. Ive seen march plates but have never seen or read of a February plate.
Rumor also has it the sedans made first run and the wagons came in a bit later. Also trying to confirm this.
