Remember the Tokyo R246 Circuit from Gran Turismo 3? Well I walked the circuit today in real life and took photos… enjoy
My starting point was one of the Sony buildings on Aoyama-dori. I swear to God, Sony must own a bajillion buildings on that street.
Here’s a real life map of R246 with the vectors each photo was taken with (position and direction):
- Where R246 got it’s name from.
2) Round the first corner and down the short straight. Obviously looks better in the summer heh.
3) Off the short straight and into Turn 2 towards…
4) Jingu Baseball Stadium. The familiar green netting is for the golf driving range.
5) Around the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery (behind the trees to the right)
6) Turn onto the back straight.
7) Entering the odd chicane on the back straight; Unless you walk it in real life, you really can’t grasp how long it is and how amazingly steep the decline and subsequent incline is here. You’re jaded by it in the game because you’re always taking it at insane speeds.
8 ) The familiar red tarmac.
9) At the bottom, starting the incline.
10) End of the back straight; This section normally has a barricade to prevent you from going straight.
11) In the game, the circuit narrows here. The right-hand side of the street is barricaded (preventing you from using the part of the road that has oncoming traffic).
12) Looking down towards the famous underpass.
13) Let’s face it. As far as Gran Turismo goes, if you don’t recognize this then umm, I don’t know… you 're not h4rdc0re or something. I’d also like to say that I almost died taking this photo. You’re not meant to stand on this center island here and I had hundreds of cars blazing past both sides. Somewhere, I have a photo of the bus that nearly clipped me from behind heh.

15) The home straight! This is the ‘ramp’ back towards the start/finish line.
16) Sony’s most prominent building on Aoyama-dori.
