That’s what’s weird… People in general don’t know how to react in certain situations. They could’ve been too close to something to make the brakes useless. Here’s how the average person will think:

Conflict
Realization of conflict (couple seconds)
Panic (several seconds)
React (who knows)

Although we all may know what to do in a certain situation, add in the fear of your life and the above chain of events, and things may not go as easy as most would think.

IIRC he was accelerating for nearly a minute.

Long enough to realize the problem, panic, call 911 and have a brief conversation with the operator.
