transmission gear ratios?

Hi There!
i want to know how to change your gear ratios and what ratios are good.

change gear ratio’s eh you can;

-throw a VLSD from a Z32TT or skyline 3.89(?) VS. our 4.11 (S13/4)
this will make your car slow of the line, but it’ll go faster top end (with speed limiter removed)

-you can change the tire size, I believe a larger diameter tire will also lower your ‘final drive’ ratio

-S15 6 speed and LSD(S15), will cahnge ratio’s…

Not a very common swap, any of these.

Changing your transmission ratios means buying nismo gears and gutting your tranny (i’m pretty sure nismo makes gears for that transmission) or buying a $10k custom racing unit with the ratios you want.

Unless you’re into some serious rallying or road racing, why bother?

As S13GG mentioned, the easiest way to change your overall ratio is to play with your tire diameter.

You could also acquire a nismo ring gear for the rear differential; I know they have a few different sizes.

S13/14s use 4.083, same as NA 300ZX’s. 300ZX TT’s use a 3.7:1 rear-end ratio IIRC.

As to what ratios are good, it depends entirely on your application and power output.

yeah, I forgot about nismo, but don’t they only make a ‘brass’ 5th gear?

there is one site that actually gives you the Gear Ratio’s as well as the Diff Ratio’s etc etc…

They have the CA starting in 88 up to the SR in 2000

Nothing on the KA but I did have a link for the KA ratio’s so I’m still looking

Unless you are running your car @ the track or something weird and need a certian gear to pull longer or something I wouldnt waste your time/money with the Tranny itself.

I had my 125 Race bike re-geared so I could ring the shit outta it in 3rd gear and not have to jump back and forth from 3rd - 4th all the time but then when you need the top end in say 4th gear its just not there… so its a win/win or lose/lose situation depending. On a bike you can just add/remove the # of Teeth from the Rear Sprocket to shift your bottom/mid/top end

To bad its not the same on a car 8)

thanks guys

hey guys, ummm, newb to really specs of cars and their meanings, and i ahvent been able to find this…
what do the gear ratios in a tranny actually mean??
