so i got a new photo printer. The Epson sp1400 to be exact. and when I print 8.5x11’s it works fine. but printing 11x17’s blurs the picture and it loses a ton of quality. doesn’t even maintain the same contrast in the colors or anything.
Now I would assume it isn’t the printer making this mistake, but what could it be? I’ve tried printing in different programs and whatnot and it still screws up.
the pictures are from a D40x so it can definitely be brought to that size and still be clear.

if its an 8x11 pic its an 8x11 pic, unless the DPI is higher then normal

I’m saying that I used a 10.2 megapixel camera to take these pictures. And I have pictures on my wall that are 16x20 that were taking by a 6 megapixel camera and came out great. But those I had done at kinkos.
So is there some sort of setting that I don’t know about that needs to be changed in order to print these pictures in a larger format?
make sure ur camera is set to 10.2…i can change the settings to make smaller prints and it cuts down the mega pixels
Bit of a different aspect ratio? I don’t know if that has anything to do with it but just a thought

if you have pics that are , lets say 801x601, and you try to simply 50%rescale them to 400x300, your bound to have problems because its not an even scaling
but if you run the 801x601 picture through a photoshop program and first trim off the extra pixels, THEN rescale 50% you retain the original overall quality, as all your doing is combining 2 pixels into one all the way across the image
make sure the pictures yor trying to print have an aspect ratio that is equaly divisable into the size you want to print
Make sure you don’t have them set for 8x10 then stretch to fit paper.
the picture isn’t being stretched in either direction to fit the paper. it’s simply making one side measurement the same as the longest side of the paper.
i’ve tried it with different pictures, some from the D40x and some from my old S3 and both have the same affect when printed on the 11x17 paper. everything gets lighter. the black areas lose alot of darkness.
i’ll look into the aspect ratio tho.
bump, figured it out.
I had two different brands of glossy photo paper. 1 for the 8.5x11 and another for the 11x17.
I turned the 8.5x11 sideways and told the printer to print an 11x17 size pic, stopped it halfway, and what came out was much much better. So the paper was the problem.
so for future reference, use recommended paper, not stuff from kinkos lol.
