Emailed a bunch of tutors this morning, no response as of yet. Have a few other pending emails. Anyone else?
Back up to the top, not a single response from any tutor I contacted.
what do you need help with specifically? I’m sure between everyone you can get enough angles to understand everything.
yeah, what exactly do you not understand? if you want to pm me a problem you need help with, i’ll be glad to try and help you. i took calc 1 last semester, taking calc 2 now.
don’t pm it! its fun to try different problems. I’m in calc 3 myself.
edit: I’m actually doing calc hw now. improper integrals then series/sequences.
lol i was just doing improper integrals trying to prepare for my test tomorrow.
I’m a little behind because I switched into a different section (only week 2 at RIT) and the teachers were on different sections. meh.
good luck tomorrow!
I mostly need help with optimization, relative minimum and maximum, inflection points and such with the use of derivatives. It is mostly the application to problems I am struggling with such as using what and when.
“take the derivative and set it equal to zero”
I can explain it all but I assume you know something and I don’t want to insult your intelligence. What exactly are you having problems with in each part?
Application problems could be maximizing square footage with a certain length of fence. Maybe the fence against a river so you only need three sides of the fence. maybe the shape is divided into sections so its a square with a common side. There you have two variables (length and width) so you need two equations: area and perimeter. Then you can solve for one variable and plug it into the other equation. then you maximize/minimize that equation then plug that value back into one of the other equations to get the second variable
Relative max and mins are using the first derivative test; plotting your max/min on a number line then testing the spaces inbetween and out side to see if it is positive or negative (if it is positive that means the slope of the original is increasing). same goes for second derivative test when exploring concavity. inflection points are where there is a “max” or “min” but the first derivative test shows both sides of the number are increasing or both decreasing, the second deriv test will show different concavities if it is an inflection point.

you know there is an asymptote at x=5 bc that will be dividing by zero. and a root of the problem will be at (-3,0) because that will make the top zero. those are two features for your graph. now use a f’ number line to find increasing or decreasing and an f’’ line to find concavity.

find any critical values (making the denominator of a fraction zero for example), plot on number line. also put your two end points on said number line and test.
(anyone feel free to correct me as it’s been a while but I think am I good so far)
^ yep that sounds about right
any luck? hows it going?
I didn’t mean to blow you off with the email but I am struggling enough on my own so I can’t really give you what you are looking for. Plus I’m not that confident so having the rest of nyspeed as a check makes me feel better with offering help.
It is all good, I got some good notes on the style of questions being asked. The best I will be able to do is probably memorize and then try to plug and play on the test tomorrow. I need someone to physically walk me through it and honestly, noone local has been available.
Thanks for at least something, I have had a few recommendations just completely blow off any request I had.
I’ve done calc 1, 2, and 3 as well as diff eq at ECC and i’ll be taking linear algebra over the summer at UB. I’m usually in capen on the 3rd floor studying/working.
I hated calc 1 and 2 the most so far. calc 3 was a breeze. the link below is what helped me through calc 1 and 2 due to a horrible teacher in calc 2, and i just didn’t pay any attention in calc 1 after have been outta school for 3 years prior. I saw the teacher write a function on the board and i was like “oh sweet it’s a formula, i can do this”, then he’s like “and that’s the solution”. My brain felt like slime at that moment.
But this is definitely worth checking out…

Thanks man, I was about to bump this up anyways because I am having some trouble again but I will look through those videos before troubling any one with requests.
as long as replying in the thread is helpful i wouldn’t consider it with a burden. Plus I am sure you will get it quick if you have the right person show you.
Well, I need someone to help me study this weekend. I am in jeporady of failing if I do not get a decent grade on this test. I am extremely confused right now and have sought help but am pretty much out of options. If anyone can meet this weekend please let me know.
