I’m rebuilding my engine. It is an unbalanced shaft V6. I wanna get a new damper. But i wonder.
The crank is externally balanced, but most of the dampers i see are “internally balanced”. so are internally balanced dampers only for interally balanced cranks?
if i get an externally balanced damper, and my flexplate (which is balanced) do i need to take everything to the engine shop to be machine balanced?
If I think i know what motor you are talking about, then you need to make sure you get an ‘externally’ balanced damper. Your entire bottom end is balance from the factory and uses the damper to take away vibrations. Internally balance shafted motors, from what i’ve learned, are still externally balanced and use balance shafts to further smooth vibration… again, only what i’ve previously heard.
thanks for responding. I have gotten mixed feedback from the SyTy guys. Some say its externally balanced, others say its internal cause it comes with an internally balanced damper. A couple people say its both internal and external. they say the front half of the crank is internally balanced, and the rear is externally balanced, with the flexplate.
The builders/vendors wont reveal what they do. i know they have their rotating assembly balanced, and i know they all use an ATI super damper. And i have no problem buying one, but i wanna get the right one.
because of the unique nature of the motor, i am very hesitant on making decisions, and letting otherwise reputable people work on it.
can you adjust an internally balanced damper with pressed in weights on the damper???
Obviously, one way to tell is if the flywheel/flexplate is keyed or pinned to go on only one way. The only way I know on the damper side is by its physical size and construction. If its big, heavy and has a rubber seperation slip, then its external. If its smaller, light and lack of rubber, then its internal. As far as i know, there is no way to adjust a balancer with pressed on weights.
I am not real big into these motors, so i know there are others out there that can shead more light on it.
When you go to order the ATI, does it specificly ask you which type you want?
Might help to tell us what this motor is …
4.3L V6 unbalanced shaft “Z” block 1985-1992
i’ll snap some pics of the balancer and flexplate i pulled off of the other motor.
the different models of ATI dampers specify that they are either external or internal, they make either.
