Upstate NY HSBC branches up for sale

Yep, just switched my ESL debit card from the ‘glove box wallet’ to my daily wallet

orly? what else is nice about M&T?

Their home banking interface is infinitely better than HSBC’s.
They offer free checking with home banking, bill pay included.
They’ve been hiring people in WNY.
They’re WNY based.
They’ve got lots of branches in the area.

I’d much rather be with a credit union, but my company is pretty ass backwards when it comes to payroll and we don’t have direct deposit. Because of that I need a local bank that has lots of branches to make depositing my check every 2 weeks as convenient as possible.

Speaking of that, I am looking into depositing my (company) checks electronically just by scanning and emailing them.

OK so here’s the latest that they told us as of today:
-Employee building branches are going. They are keeping HSBC ATM’s at the Center, Atrium, and Mortgage on Walden but One HSBC Center will now have a First Niagara branch :bloated: Only employee accounts themselves are staying HSBC.

-If you only have an Online Savings or credit card account with HSBC, you will not be migrated. If you have any relationship with an HSBC branch, ALL of your accounts (deposits, loans, online savings mortgage, credit card, etc.) go to First Niagara.

-One HSBC Center lease likely not to be renewed when it expires. They are remodeling the Atrium to cram as many people in there as possible since they own that but it has a 2000 person capacity right now. There are currently 1200 in there, some of which will go to FN cause they’re branch support positions, and 2200 in the Center. Simple math, along with the announcement of 30,000 global job cuts today, says that some people won’t be coming along. If I’m still with this company I’d probably shoot for remote work 3 days a week or full time, with desk sharing, since they’re prob gonna push that heavily. But it feels more and more like the US operation is being chopped up and sold off to fund Asia. Would be nice to jump to something on its way up.

And the arena rights stay.

Holy dogshit. ^

As a former HSBCer, I’m glad I left when I did.

Actually, that’s not entirely true. I wish I’d gotten laid off back in April; they announced layoffs a week after I gave notice. If I were (un)lucky, I could’ve had my new job and a few months’ salary as severance.

Yeah they are saying that the rest of the buffalo staff is safe from the cuts but I’ll believe it when i see it.

how long does HSBC have naming rights for the arena?

What is going to happen to the HSBC building in Depew, I think the ones that deals with foreclosure and housing stuff (I believe)?

I have been thinking about switching banks…I guess I really have to now. I will be going to M&T for all my banking. HSBC was garbage anyways.

Mortgage center on walden, along with the whole HSBC Mortgage Corp., is undergoing “strategic review.” They could decide to keep it, expand it, close it, sell it, really anything.

Hmmmm, my tenant works there…

I see FN admitted they’ll have to close or sell about half the branches in the Buffalo News today.

Bump.

My first reaction to this it that it sucks.

The fact that we had an international banking giant sponsoring our arena seemed like it have us some legitimacy. Now we seem so provincial because no one knows who First Niagara is.

I should be happy that a local company is doing better while a foreign one is moving out, but I dunno this is just my immediate reaction.

It’s too bad they aren’t buying the rights and renaming it “The Aud”.

Even worse, I hate “Center”. “Arena” sounds so much better.

Not as bad in the end

A while back I had gotten a letter from Key/HSBC/FN stating that the branch that owned my account was being sold to Keybank. So I don’t think the closing will be too bad.

Good opportunity to re-interview and clean house as well…

i’m surprised that PNC didn’t snap up the branches since it was forced to sell a bunch of acquired branches down here to first niagara in order to maintain competition…i would have thought they would take the opportunity to move into FNs backyard.

PNC bit off more than they could chew for awhile with the National City deal. I expect them to stay on the sidelines for a couple more years while they digest it.

Goodbye Tower. I called this over a year ago.
