Im considering a vented hood to go along with my RB to help with cooling and change up the look a little but im worried water may cause issues if im caught in the rain. Any guys daily driving with a vented hood please chime in with your experiences in the rain and washing the car. Ive read from other forums(typically FWD’s) that water pouring on the headers doesn’t hurt and even if the filter get a little wet it has never effected their cars. Id like to know the cons with our engine bay layout and crazy styled vented hoods. Please specify your engine/hood as well, im really hoping to hear from someone with a RB S13 so i can make the best decision for my S13.4. Because of my odd combination intercooler piping has been a challenge as well as my intake manifold, Im hoping a vented hood wont be.
I run a vented coilpack cover which would be right where most hoods vents may be. The hoods I have in mind are the D1 style, I really want this one pictured below. Its raised at the back to hide the wipers, on some hoods its got some Mercedes looking vents which would keep your cabin intake sucking fresh outside air instead of pure engine bay heat. If anyone knows the brand/name of this hood or similar lmk!
i used to have a cut up hood right above the air filter, and as far as driving in the rain, i had absolutely no problems with it. unless you dump a bucket of water right in it, any rain or anything will break up before getting anywhere close to your engine so you’ll be fine.
I’m molding a DMAX vent into my R33 and was wondering the same thing. On my buddies S14 the water comes through onto the belts so it jsut squeals for a few minutes after startup after its rain but thats nothing to worry about. I figure with a venture coilpack cover though you might run into issues. I know coilpacks arn’t happy when they’re in an inch or two of water haha. I would sell the snazy vented cover to pay for the vented hood and then on really hot days just not run a cover.
