Vizio VU42LF Review * $1100 1080p LCD

In the spirit of christmas, my wife & I wanted to bring my folks into the 21st century, so I spent a few days looking for a decent set for their living room. Didn’t need to be high end.
With that in mind, I read alot of reviews & recommendations for 42" LCDs in the $1500 range - I kept coming back to the Vizio VU42LF.

I was apprehensive because We have a Vizio 42" 720p LCD in our bedroom which I am disappointed in. This set was cheap, and I’m paying for it, but I justify it because it is not the primary set.

Even though I had my concerns, based on nearly glowing reviews; the price point; and the pricing of set that had comparable specs / stats - it seemed a no-brainer.

In the end, I picked up the new VU42LF for $1,099 @ BJs.

Because this was a surprise gift, the folks did not have an HD feed - so I busted out the rabbit ears.

After calibrating the set in their Lvg room, & with 1080i HD OTA signal:
-this set is far better then I expected.
-Color & contrast are crisp.
-NFL action has no discernable blur @ ~12’… nor as close as 7’.
-The blacks leave a little to be desired, but maybe I’m spoiled by my Sammy DLP set.
-The onboard sound is far better then my Vizio.
-And, for the price, the VU42LF really blows away the competition that I was looking at.

I did not compare this set in store (for many, many reasons). Instead, I spent some time viewing 42" 1080 sets of friends - a Phillips LCD, Samsung LCD, & Dell Plasma - which were already dialed in. The VU42 is cleary & noticably better IMO.

Cliffs: I thought Vizio brand was in the shallow end (Olevia et al) of the pool - but this set benefited from alot of good reviews and very few common concerns.
Bought it, calibrated it, and for the Quality & Performance to Price ratio - this is a fantastic set. Based on HD OTA alone.

Visio has really come a long way. I would never put one in the living room as the primary TV, that is a Samsung/Sony arena however for a bedroom or for a bar it is a great choice for the price!

That was my thinking as well - but the folks are not tech people at all. They prolly didn’t need a 1080 set at all, let alone be able to notice the minute differences. Hell, they prolly wouldn’t have noticed blurring

This is an upgrade from a 14 yr old Toshiba 27" set. :mamoru:

But yea, for the price, this would make a deent living room set if you flat out could not afford better.

good deal  After xmas I’m interested in grabbing a nice set for the living room, maybe I’ll look into one of these.

I have no real interest in spending an arm and a leg on a tv, since I really don’t watch much anyways.

What kind of inputs does it have?

I saw a sammy 50" at Circuit shitty for 1300. I wonder if its any good

samsungs are too cartoonish looking for me

they look good though, i love their computer monitors

I just saw a HiFi/ AV mag at work that did a review between that Vizio, a Toshiba and a Sony, and that thing blew the others out in terms of picture quality. I didn’t think it was possible.

Sony is not longer a player in the TV world. Ask any person who does installs for a living and we can tell you Sony HD LCD’s and Plasma’s are not anywhere near the quality of the old SD CRT’s that made them famous. So the review in whatever magazine that was, was a poor comparison. I would like to see it compared to a LG, Samsung, or Panasonic.

That’s racist

not coming from him.

i have heard the same from the installers at advantage.

I would believe it, depending on the models in the comparison.

When I hooked it up and dialed it in I was expecting to see “meh”, after watching it for ~1hr, it was def “wow”

i wouldn’t have made a thread otherwise. :tspry:

I love my Samsung. I have owned a few of their TVs now (SD and HD) and they have all been great.

The Toshiba and the Sony are not that impressive in any form.

Agreed.

I had a Sammy DLP last year, and had the chance to replace it under insurance…
Looked around for a couple months, and got another Samsung DLP.

I <3 my Aquos for the same pricetag. However I have heard good things about Vizio tv’s when I was under the impression they were shit.
