Coolstorydudebro, I’ve Had my fair share of intel and amd CPUs. I use to own a core 2 quad extreme at one point, if you remember correctly its a $1,000 CPU and was the biggest waste of money, big fucking deal I could do a few things quicker and it was a little more snapper. The only reason I owned it because a friend gave me a deal on it, I was happy but I really don’t see a point in getting a i5 quad core for $170, when you can get a fx amd octcore for $200 that is better then the i5. So performance is way better, you should try a CPU out for yourself before you go and read elsewhere that it’s not the best. There were reports that the octcore. Crashed or blue screened when gaming, guess what haven’t had a issue. In all reality if you wanna get a intel i5 quad Its your say blow your money. Stats are there as a guide no to say who has the bigger badder CPU. Amd is a great way to stay on a budget and get great performance, also the best bang for your buck. Also I’m not on any nut swinging side I like amd and intel the same, just giving an opinion.
Tomshardwareguide.com has better comparison charts if anyone was wondering.
I’ve used asrock before they are a cheaper version of Asus kinda, I had to rma a board after 2 months of use. Go with a Asus motherboard. And your not going to build a intel i5 system on a budget of $500 unless you cheap out on parts… I.e crappy motherboard brands asrock biostar jetway etc…
I ordered the i7, should be here tomorrow. Ivy bridge is probably going to be very expensive when it first comes out so IMO i7 is the better choice for me.
i5s overclock nicely on just air
Actually no they won’t, it should be very close, if anything Sandy Bridge will get a big slash to clear out stock.

my HTPC only has a 3.1 i3 and I can’t find any tasks that max it out in the real world. I just can’t understand if you’re a non-hardcore gamers or doing something like CAD you would waste money on an i7.
Most games won’t even push an i3…
That is largely due to the fact not many games are thread aware.
Your posts are so irrelevant to this community, yes you don’t need the biggest badest chip for certain games, but in reality technology changes everyday. Some games to require more then one core or thread…
Does anyone crunch SETI?
so does anyone have a sata to ide adapter I can buy? I need to get stuff off my old hard drive and put it on a new one
I tried saying it was a waste of money too. Why even ask for advice if you ignore it?
Just because I didn’t take your advise doesn’t mean I didn’t consider it, I also do some video encoding with blu-ray movies too that I didn’t mention
in which case you’d want an i3 and a good video card?
Is the i3/i5 that much cheaper? What are we talking about 100 or 200 dollar difference in the end? What a joke, definitely just get the better one.
I got my i3 for $100 (i’ve recently seen them well under $100). The i7 2600 is $300 right now on newegg. You could buy a kick ass video card or SSD with difference.
If you are going to get the 2600 you should really get the 2600k which is much better. (or the 2500k for slightly less $$$)
exactly why i got the i7, only a $70 difference between the i5
Wow Microcenter has the i7-2600k for 279.99 right now.
