Watch Crew: What to buy?

Nice pick up!

something more dressy… ideally a Portugeuse, but i don’t think i’ll stretch the budget that far.

I’d like a 42-45mm pocket watch conversion with an exhibition back but in sapphire, not glass on the front… I’ll probably start with something off ebay and mod it. Leather strap.

something like:

Driver’s Angle??

This is one i’m watching but likely won’t bid… crap pics but the decorated movement looks hot for a 1918 piece

Good idea Bing. I hope you get one soon.

What’s the general consensus on seiko vs bulova vs citizen and kinetic vs automatic vs eco-drive? (i’m familiar with how each one works) Am i better off with just a standard battery powered watch?

just picked up both of these watches:

way back in this thread i described how my china skeleton (shipped from and serviced from germany but defintely china grade) fell apart on me a couple times… be delicate with them.

it is also pretty inaccurate.

On leather…mmm

looks better on SS … I’m a bracelet kind of guy, though

my Oris is on a bracelet so i’ll wear that for now if i’m in a bracelet mood. I’m kinda liking the leather right now.

Can you post up some more info on this? I want to see some pics!!

I’m in the middle of pulling the trigger on a New 2009 Submariner Date (16610).

Anything I should be aware of, watch wise that I might like better for < $7500? I’ve been eyeing one up for a year now and I haven’t found anything better that I like.

I want a classic look and < 45mm.

There is a WIDE array of watches that look better in my opinion, at prices that are 1/5 of what the rolex costs. Most are not on the same reputation pedestal that Rolex gets, but are still lifetime time pieces.

Yeah but then you wouldn’t have a rolly on your arm while you’re pouring chandon. How else will the women know that you’ve got it going on?

Some rolex’s hold their value really well though. Daytonas are sometimes worth more than MSRP for some strange reason…

There is a top secret Omega dealer you can be referred to through WUS with some code words that gives 30% off… in Washington apparently. I asked if he does Rolex but was told he doesnt. I can help you get 20-25% off Rolex in Ontario but it probably doesnt work out for you with the US dollar vs. CDN dollar being the worst for the US in our lifetime right now. If you cant find any break on a rolex though let me know. I literally do have a rolex / Omega / Tag contact in Ontario… They offered a Tag at 30% off MSRP. They are an authorized dealer for all 3 brands and more… they just put $2M into their Rolex room

RE: Oris Pics:

44mm, Valjoux 7750, very clean dial lay out… much better than the speedmaster actually. I have the original box, manuals, links etc.

Meh, I think my Subaru looks nicer than a Veyron.

I already have a couple $500-$1000 watches. I’m ready to take the next step.

The problem with new is that they are retailing now (new style) for $7,250. I can get an '09 for $5500. I can get a 1987 for $5000.

Well, that’s why I didn’t really make any recommendations. You said you wanted something that looks better and is less than $7500. As stated, there are plenty, but you won’t get “Rolex” on the face.

Some Breitlings are considerably more affordable than $7500 (some considerable more) , have classic styling, and hold true on top-end reputation. Might want to scan their lineup and see if any catch your eye. I personally prefer the Breitling designs to the Rolex ones.

Some Breitlings that I like:

Bing, I was hoping the XXL mentioned would be that one. It’s a very clean look, and I love the minimalistic bezel. When you get serious about cutting it loose, let me know.

that is very true, but trying to get rolex’s repaired when not bought from an AD is a pain in the ass… i messed up my Speedmaster already and even though i have all the documentation AD’s dont want to touch it and Omega and Rolex put huge pressure on thier supply chain to prevent unauthorized purchasing of genuine parts and accessories.

i’m a total advocate for not buying new, but if you’re paying more than 60% of MSRP for a used or old version of a high end watch you should probably go new and hunt for a 20-30% discount from an AD.

Vegas is giving their stuff away right now aren’t they?

Let’s just make an agreement before hand and i’ll hunt for a replacemet in the meantime. It will help get me into an IWC sooner

I was at 3 retailers in Vegas back in October and they told me to go fuck myself if I wanted even $5 off. They’d save me tax and ship me the box.

Bing, just find out what I’d be looking at for a NEW Sub date. I’ll even give you a finder’s fee.

I plan on getting mine rebuilt every 5-7 years anyways, and spending $700+/- to get it up to snuff.

Ontario has 13% sales tax so a 20%-25% discount doesnt go very far…

i’ve heard that Royal de Varsailles in Toronto has offered as high as 30% off on Rolex before… if that is true then you should be able to find that in the US… call some AD’s in PA or Erie where there is no sales tax and have them ship out of state

30% of US MSRP with no tax would be SICK for a Rolex.

agreed.
