Watch Geeks - Opinion on first "Swiss Watch"

Hey guys, I’m toying with the idea of picking up a decent sport watch, and I kind of have my eye on this omega seamaster:

or

both are around $2400. A pretty good intro purchase for me, not too expensive, but not a cheap dumb watch either.

what’s the consensus opinion from watch nerds, and if there is a watch you prefer in this price range, please recommend, as im open to all offers :slight_smile:

thanks!

:jam:

I sea.

Very nice,I’d rock either one. :tup:

If I planned on buying a $2500 watch i’d keep an eye on bidz.com’s watch auctions.Some really nice gold/diamond watches on there.

for that I would look for a Bell & Ross, nice casual and very distinct, not as common at Omega

(There are different color faces, I just like the Black on White)

in the price range i’d do the TAG Heuer Carrera.

i prefer the metal bands though if you choose to be a bit more sporty.

Leather = dress
Metal = Casual/Business Casual
Rubber = Everyday

TAG doesn’t really do it for me…Go get a vintage Heuer and now we’re talking!

Omegas are fantastic watches, and most in the watch community would agree that Omega > TAG. You’ll truly enjoy that watch. I especially like Omega because that watch is extremely versatile, dress, sport, etc… it can fit in.

You should REALLY consider buying pre-owned though (you can get a Seamaster Chrono for $2600), PM me if you want to talk about watches.

Shit I might as well use this opportunity to whore my latest watch:

Have you looked into a BR 03-92? I like mine a lot.

Just a note about straps:

That omega will support a variety of straps including rubber and the omega bracelet should you decide to mix it up.

You might also want to consider Seiko, Hamilton, Breitling, Oris, etc…

Nice choice

You guys kill me with your expensive watches, haha.

But hey, if that’s your thing, all the best.

God I love Panerai’s…

Can you justify that amount for a watch? Or is just another “see how much I can spend on something” type of deal? Not to put down your watch habits I am just curious what else you get besides keeping the time for that price? Mini fleshlight on the back would be tits though…

Honestly, I don’t see how it could be interpreted any other way. Really, I mean more power to you if you want to drop a few thousand on a watch, but at the end of the day, it tells you the time (and whatever other BS features you feel you need). I don’t see it as a symbol of status, nor does it impress me to find out someone spent that much on a watch. If anything, it almost makes me question their sanity, and why they finance other expensive items they own, due to prior astronomical investments in the telling of the time. But again, if you got to the flow, do what you got to do…

Why do people buy expensive cars? All you need is a civic to get from point a to point b. People pay for exclusivity, quality, etc, when buying a watch just like anything else you buy. I like the omegas.

There are any number of reasons to buy high end watches. Some people do it as a status symbol for particularly well known brands like Rolex. These people are consumers. Others are into the mechanics and are focused on the movements. You can buy for style or even investment grade watches in some case. These people are hobbyists and enthusiasts.

I like the movements and I just have a general interest in all types of watches. I am thinking about picking up some tools and learning how to assemble a watch to learn more about them.

As far as telling the time, any $20 digital watch will be far more accurate than even the best automatic or manual wind watch out there regardless of price. A fantastic movement will be accurate .5 seconds a day whereas a basic digital will be .1 second or less.

Exactly. A non car enthusiast would think what a lot of people here do to their cars and the obsessive amount of time is completely useless.

Omegas are nice watches too.

yeah, you and i obviously have different tastes.

No offense, but i don’t think an automotive forum is a great place to try making this argument. Like spencer said…in the end, a car just gets you from A -> B. Yes, a watch “just tells the time”…from an engineering stand point and somebody who loves quality details, watches are great.

My personal preference is simplicity, yet i like skeleton watches too, just to see how everything works with such precision.

The nicest part about quality watches, you don’t have to put them into storage 6 months out of the year. Also they barely depreciate, if at all…that can’t be said about 99% of nice cars.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems most people are into the omega watches, and since I obviously like them also, it’ll probably be my front runner when the time comes. ( haha pun. )

Everyone pretty much replied to the questions posed in this thread, so I’d just be redundant in elaborating.

Joe, PM’d
