Welders ?

He’s looking at spending $100 bucks on something to try and dick around with…
then you suggest he spend 1k+ on machine/supplies instead…?

rly?

And that would be exactly why I said TRY SOMEONE ELSES MACHINE FIRST. If he likes welding, it just may well be worth the investment for him. And yes, the ability to weld a variety of materials easily for various forms of art may well be worth the cost as well. I have no idea what kind of funds this poster has access to when it comes down to it, so I just stated my OPINION on an OPTION that he MAY want to look into IF he gets serious.

So yes.

rly.

:2fingers:

Now I can kinda start to see why people find you a douchebag.
o.O

Why because he added an opinion and you are being a huge fggt about it? Who cares if it isn’t what is right for butch it is a solid opinion from someone who knows what they are talking about. The only douchbag here is the one who gets bent out of shape when they can’t handle someone posting what isn’t what they think it should be. Grow up.

FWIW I bought a used Lincoln MIG welder. Having never welded before, I figured I would shave my engine bay to get some practice. After doing that, I got a lot better quickly. MIG is very easy to use, and now that I have one, it seems like I am always finding new ways to use it. I would recommend something with a gas setup, because the welds seem to come out so much better. Really, I wouldn’t even waste my time with a harbor freight welder. You are better off finding something of decent quality used. In a couple weeks when I am done with the car, you are welcome to try mine out for a bit to see if you like it.

does anyone know who snap-on contracts to make their migs??

It use to be Lincoln.

I was thinking of making my own thread but why not use this one.

has anything changed in the welding world, I’m looking to buy one, most likely mig. I need it for installing patch panels in body work, exhaust and possibly motor mounts one day.

i know Eastwood has their own welders too, which I would be more comfortable with over harbor freight.

i looked on Craigslist and it seems like a lot of them are old, and still pricey, I would feel safer with a cheaper newer one with a warranty.

budget around $300-$500, but I don’t plan using it that much so like I said Eastwood has one for around $300

Hobart Handler 140.

I grabbed a Lincoln Pro-mig 180 from Lowes (6 months no interest and 10% off); but it’s a 220V unit. Grabbed a 200cf tank used, full, with a fresh cert for $150. Setup works awesome; used it to do a bunch of fab work, patch panels, seam welding, etc on my firebird; welder never missed a beat doing things ranging from thin body sheetmetal up through .150" wall tubing/plate.

I have 220v in the garage for my air compressor, so should I consider a 230v welder? I don’t think I will be doing any big projects. I’m mainly buying it to install patch panels on my car, and exhaust work one day. But like I said, if I need to make some custom motor or tranny mounts I don’t know how thick of steal I would need to he able to do that but it would be nice if the welder had the capacity.

thx

I think I’m going to go with the hobart 140 mig welder. I called a buddy of mine who is a welder, and he said theyre awesome.

Picked up a Hobart 140 Mig from Tractor supply, $479.99!!!

Nice! Now go grab some C25, none of that flux core ish.

I plan to first use the welder for installing a patch panel on my door of my '85 T-type.

how do I know what gauge steel to use?

First time using the welder, I decided to practice with it by making a cart for it. I bought the supplies from homedepot (72inch 1 1/4x 1 1/4 1/8th inch thick angle iron, 4 swivel wheels. $30. If I got the metal from a metal supply store I probably would have saved a lot more. I didn’t have much of a selection and 1/8th inch thick is over kill for this lol.

I used the flux core wire the welder came with, so that splatter is due to that, one day I will buy the tank setup and see how much better it turns out. I don’t think I did too bad for basically the first time welding. Just matched the settings to the chart on the inside of the side cover.

I thought I took a picture of the front weld up close(seen in last pic), I didn’t go all the way across in one stroke, also didn’t clean up any of the welds other than using a wire brush.

Now I have to get some por 15 and paint the cart lol, but I might end up adding more metal to it, maybe make a shelf to get the welder higher, and a place for the tank for the gas.

Here’s a pic of the longer weld, but I stitch welder it, didn’t do the entire length in one stroke
