Even if the electricity was free and you never put gas in it, you’d likely still be better off with the civic.
EDIT: actually I am wrong about that. You end up doing around $1550 better if electric is free and no gas is put in the Volt. That’s not the case though. According to EPA comparison of the 2 cars, your annual cost to run the Volt is $1000 and the civic is $1850.
With that factored in, you’d save 2550 over 3 years on the Volt vs the Civic. So you’re still around 1500 in the hole for the Volt once you subtract 2550 from the 4000 addition cost of the car. Civic is cheaper, but not by THAT much.
