What hybrid car should I buy?

Seriously asking, since I haven’t looked. What is the pricing on a Prius? On top of that, what will the monthly fuel costs be? A Prius is ~50 MPG every day, all day, right? A Volt… I got 399 MPG over the summer, able to do at least 42 miles on EV alone every day. I have only used the engine for 8% of my driving time so far. In the winter, I’m getting only about 200 MPG, since the engine kicks on more due to the weather. In 6 months, I’ve spend only $61 on gas so far. I have a fully loaded lease for around $360/mo. A standard option Volt (no leather/NAV/backup camera/BOSE) is less than $300/mo. Come spring, I’m sure my overall MPG will be about 200 due to the cold, with my stats showing I’ll probably use about $130 gas all winter. (Voltstats.net)

I’m not sure what the math of the Prius pans out to. I know they’re a lot cheaper MSRP. Hows the cost of fuel per month?

I guess it’s give some/take some.

Jam is looking at buying a mid-2000 prius, not a brand new one.

Oh, OK. $150/mo or so? Yea… the Volt isn’t exactly in that price range…

No, it’s around 42 in the winter and 45 in the Summer, combination highway and city driving. The newer (2010+) ones are a little bit better (add 1 - 2 mpg).

http://www.carsdirect.com/car-safety/how-to-disable-prius-traction-control had to look it up. I for sure thought he was kidding.

Yeah, like I said, $10-$15k. 200 mpg? That’s pretty crazy!

either way I think I’m settled with a gen 2 Prius. And for all the people saying that they suck in the snow… You guys are as bad as the boat owners who daily drive a full sized truck all year because they “have to tow my boat!” What, 6 times a year? We have really deep, crazy snow (I live in buffalo) a total of a week or 2 a year? I have an awd SUV for that! My Jetta hasn’t moved in a week! Fuck that shit!

this time next year the Prius will sit for a week if we get crazy snow, and the element will get us everywhere! Shit.

We got a set of cheap snow tires for our Prius and it’s a tank. It’s far better than my TDI in the snow.

I have a set for my Jetta, a friend of mine with a Prius recently put oem vw mk4 5 lug wheels on his Prius using a set of $20 hubcentric rings. Like a boss

I have been contemplating the same thing, Jam. Another thing to consider, and I say this with a sigh, is a dual fuel cavalier. 01-04 I think. They use a 5.5 gallon tank for CNG and also run on gasoline. Transition seamlessly. Last I checked CNG was $1.24/g. I know a guy commuting in one and he is getting 30mpg on CNG. I checked gas buddy and found 87 octane at delta sonic at for $3.58/g. So for the price of one gallon of gasoline you get the equivalent of 86 mpg out of the same amount CNG.

Pretty good, only you have to daily a cavalier.

it depends on how many miles you drive as well, my daily commute is over 100 miles so i would get significantly less gas mileage than you in a volt

lease was 245 a month for a 2010 and i average 54mpg summer and 47mpg winter (mostly highways but i have a couple large mountains too)

when you can pick up a gen 2 or 3 for under 15,000 and get that kind of fuel economy the volt is almost 20,000 more cash price

id imagine for the lease pricing they have a stupid high residual and 0.0001 lease factor to get to those figures you are speaking of

i know if i didnt drive more than 20,000 miles a year i wouldnt even look at a hybrid
