no interest in the business plan… I just want an hourly rate for me showing up and using your lift, air tools, etc…
I would totally pay $20 an hour to not have to deal with jackstands or need to airtools (that I don’t own).
much beyond that I can’t see it really being a great financial choice because as you get closer to shop labor rates I’ll just have a tech do the work also.
I can see a place like this doing well to a point. How many people have all those specialty tools and such needed for certain jobs? A lift is very handy, and a heated garage is amazing in the winter time even if you only need it for 20-30 minutes to do an oil change. I can’t see a way of it being very cost effective though. And having a tech on the spot to help out when you need either an extra pair of hands or someone who knows how to weld.
But in all reality, i’d rather do the work in my driveway with a few friends. I’d still pay a reasonable fee to use a lift/welder when needed instead of going to muffler man or something like that.
The more i hit the backspace key the more i think this is a horrible idea. Maybe if it was a large shop with a dyno for club events it could be profitable.
You want to have people pay to have a knowledgeable tech on hand to tell YOU how to work on the car…I’m a tech…I don’t want to work on my own shit lol. At that rate, I would just pay him to deal with the headaches.
No offense as stated earlier, it’s been thought of, just giving you a different perspective if it hasn’t already been posted.
Why can’t you just require the person signs a waiver form saying that anything and EVERYTHING that happens to you, your vehicle, or your property is not of your concern or responsibility. Kind of like a parking garage, you pay to park there, but if your car gets broken into they’re not at fault or of any responsibility for it.
Having a lawyer write up a well written contract/waiver wouldn’t work and help with the costs of insurance on such a business? Skip the fact that of a “tech” on hand. Say you’re just renting the ability to work on your car in a place with a lift, heat, all the tools you could ask for… Isn’t that something people would want? Say maybe someone that doesn’t have their own place to work on cars but would prefer to pay say $25/hour to or daily rental fee rather than $90+/hour & parts for a garage to do it?
I really can’t see this being a profitable business at all.
It may be able to pay for itself if it were a club with annual member dues, and the techs were just members helping each other out.
My school club did a brake clinic. The results were laughable, and the shop ended up being held liable, so doing a class to raise revenue is out of the question…
Luckily no-one hurt themselves or died driving their vehicles…
I would pay a membership fee or something to use a garage with lifts, air and welding equipment.
Maybe if you had a large fenced lot to charge people for storage also it would help to pay for things. My dad pays 40 bucks a month to store a 25’ trailer.
