Going to check one out soon. It’s a 72 with the 4 speed. Here is the CL link. http://buffalo.craigslist.org/cto/1927364912.html. Just wondering what are some normal things to look for. Iv been on bimmerfourm but not to much on there about the 2002.
Nice find, I always stumble across ones that are spanked on craigslist.
Good luck
I was a Bmw fanatic and kept tabs here ya go. Useful info here http://www.bmw2002faq.com/content/view/80/32/
That one for sale looks pretty clean too.
i saw this the other day thing looks dope!!!
rust rust and more rust. This one says that all the critical areas are rust free where they tend to rot.
is it just me or does it still seam a bit over priced? I can understand NADA value for a completely stock 2002, but this thing has been modded and torn into a few times which imho makes it worth far less when talking classics.
Using NADA when evaluating a classic car is a joke at best.
What to look out for?
Rust, followed by more rust.
Even if it says “rust free” there will be rust.
I’d say rust…
Car looks nice by the way, but that seems like a lot…
What to look out for? You mean besides the fact that it’s an almost 40 year old BMW for $7500?
Just from the pics you can see the lower 1/4s are rotted out as well as the lower section of the doors and around the rear fender wells have bubbles and holes in the spare tire compartment. The paint has a bunch of scratches and paint chips and no mirror finish. I’d say $3-4k is more realistic since its prob going to cost another $4k to have the body/paint redone. Undercarriage looks solid tho.
Thank you guys. I figured by the lack of real problems that rust would be the main issue. I don’t plan on going there willing to pay 7.5k. If I can get it for mid 5 decent deal?

alot of good info thx. I did a google search for 2002 sites and didn’t see that one. Alot of good shit on there.
Look for rust on the shock towers in the trunk and the mounting points for the rear suspension. I had the rear suspension literally fall out of one of mine back in the day…that was scary!
thts a lot of $ for a 2002, still - do want
That car needs a more classic BBS wheel on it. Those wheels are killing it for me.
That’s a 73’ bumper - which most 2002 guys go AWAY from.
hmm.
People who think that they are going to get a running driving halfway decent 2002 for $3K are nuts.
Rust in the door? Might be bondo over it? If so, where else is there bondo.
And don’t always believe them if they say no bondo. I did one, and I now am stripping 3/8" of bondo off one quarter panel.
I’m sure that car is bondo’ed all o ver the place…
whats the best way to check for bondo? a magnent?
If thats really bondo thats cracking with what looks like rust under it I’d stay the fuck away because its probably everywhere. Thats one lesson I learned from owning 70s rotboxes.
