Upgrade to WinXP and run WMP 9.x, all your problems will be solved… Welcome to the 21st century…

if the error comes with .AVI’s … then:

Its best to use a DirectShow decoding filter such as FFDShow to decode AVI content. FFDshow will decode XviD, DivX 3/4/5, 3IVX, and has support for many other codec’s.
It can be downloaded at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&package_id=59355&release_id=255667

Now, if FFDShow does not support decoding the content in question please do the following.

If you have the correct codec installed and the video still doesn’t play download GSpot (Above) and run your AVI though the program. If Gspot says “Failed to render”, “Missing Chuck”, etc. then your video file is corrupt.

if the error comes when opening MPEG or MPG (Also VCD, SVCD)… then:

Reinstalling DirectX will overwrite quartz.dll and re-register it in Windows. quartz.dll is the MPEG-1 Decoder that WMP will default to. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/default.htm)

If reinstalling DirectX does not fix the error then its likely the you have an MPEG-2 encoded file. So you will want to purchase an MPEG-2 decoder. (http://www.zachd.com/pss/pss.html#mpeg2)

the directx fix should probably solve your issue…
