GAITHERSBURG, Md. – A woman trying to do a good deed for a soldier wounded in Iraq is stalked and robbed at Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg on Monday.
Cindy McGrew runs Operation Second Chance, a business that helps wounded soldiers being treated at Walter Reed. On Monday night, McGrew was buying presents for a soldier to take home to his children. She bought an xBox 360 and a PlayStation Portable, but when she took the items to her truck at about 7:30 p.m., she was attacked.
“I hit the door lock on my truck and I opened the door and just as I sat the package on the seat, I was pushed from behind and nudged in my back and pushed to the side, and someone reached in and took the bag, and I just remember screaming, ‘No!’” McGrew said.
Police arrived within three minutes, but the men were gone, but they were captured by a security camera.
“Sears security has a tape of everything,” McGrew said. “They saw the two guys following me. They were coming one behind the other and they put their hood up and they were following me out through the store.”
McGrew relies on donations to buy airplane tickets and gifts for wounded soldiers and their families. The stolen game systems cost her about $650.
“I’m just upset that this soldier, I told him that evening, last night, that I was on my way to the store to get the things for his children,” McGrew said.
Police are investigating and will be looking at a lot of videotape from security cameras.
