Working with your hands vs. formal education

lol

I’d just like to point out what one of my friends dads (who makes more than this entire board combined btw) said: “people who go to college, are the people who work for people like me”

Not knocking education at all, but also, don’t knock people who have done the bare minimum as far as education, but has a good job, and a good life, and has got there all on his own.

edit: street smarts>>> book smarts

This is true. However, he’s the success story, and I give him credit cause I’m sure he worked hard to get there. But for every him that made it big, there’s 100 him’s that tried to do so, failed, and are now the people that bag my groceries and clean the shitter after us people who go to college drop deuces at work.

The average person in Akron has a smile 80% better than yours.:pedo::rx3::smiley:

Your mouth is an example of what not to do with teeth.

You shouldn’t be on NYSpeed… you should be surfing http://www.dentalplans.com/moreinfo/plansvsinsurance.asp?zipcode=

Nobody is bragging about living in Akron… the cost of living somewhere is bragging? I must live in Atlanta to talk about where I live.

I’ll stick with doing what I love for hobbies. Jobs pay way more.

I agree… everyone is free to handle their own affairs however they want. We lose site when we get in to arguments as to why opinions are right.

That doesn’t even make sense you stupid hick. Go back to your trailer with your old ass broken TV, boat that doesn’t run and used PCs and do the dishes for your “girl”.

I’d like to point out, that 99.99999% of the rest of the population, is working for the people that went to college, and your friend is about to be bought up by them.

Education doesn’t equal success, but people who are like “OMG, Bill Gates is the richest man in the world and didn’t need college” ARE THE BIGGEST FUCKING RETARDS ON THE PLANET.

Education is a tool. You increase your odds exponentially by having and using education. If you’re a tool box and have a brain like Jack, no ammount of school is going to help you, but the reality is, the VAST majority of people will be better off with an education than without. You don’t need one, but then again, MegaMillions tickets only cost $1 too… probably better odds.

<3 Walter. LOL at going to college being for people who work for people. I am considering opening a business. I can think of about ohhh 934539485739487 things I learned in school that will help me through life. One of my biggest regrets in life has been not taking education serious at a younger age.

I <3 Walter

+1

ive worked as a carpenter/cabinet maker since i was 18, now a machinist for two years.

Never was one to take schooling seriously, now i want to do so much more with my life, but im realizing there isnt a whole lot open to me right now with my current education.

Dont get me wrong, im makinga damn good wage with what im doing right now. but more and more i keep looking around and thinking to myself “Damn, you could do so much better”

So… time to go back too school :nerd:

I find it downright hilarious how nearly everyone’s attack ON going to undergraduate / graduate / postgraduate programs is “my friend / my brother / my dog / my dawg has a so and so degree from so and so and is now unemployed.” You seldom see someone saying “my friend / my brother / my dog / my dawg dropped out of school to follow his life’s goal of chilling out and is now unemployed.”

A select case in which someone went to school and is now unemployed is by no means a reason to not pursue post secondary schooling yourself.

The street smarts vs. book smarts argument is also rather comical. Incessantly you see people writing “street smarts > book smarts” (or the opposite), but seldom do you see someone actually up and say that a blend of both is ideal. If you’d like to get anywhere in life a blend of both street smarts AND book smarts is ideal (sans the few rare cases which I’m sure morons will spout out).

But then again, who knows. I’m only 20 and have no idea what the real world is about. :gotme:

I sold all that stuff to buy you braces, caps and crowns. And a lot of floss.
Really though… I sold all that stuff for profit. More than you made at work last week.
Please don’t talk, your teef are showing.

I brought it up because most of the people on here with degrees are fucking morons. There aren’t many people on here with street smarts. Ideally, a combination of the 2 will keep food on the table, your family safe and you’ll enjoy life more than the people around you who only have 1 or the other.

100% valid, though I wasn’t singling you out. You weren’t the first person to say it, and I’m sure you won’t be the last. It’s just said over and over again, when in reality the person saying it only succeeds in the “looking like an idiot” aspect of life.

Flag pole 3 oclock. Be there.Ding ding ding

Only if you bring your dad and ill bring mine as well.

My money’s on Sam and Drew.

When did I ever say anything that you posted above? I never knocked education, ever.

I was mocking the people who go to school at some high end private school and put there nose up to people who go to a cheaper school, when in the end, we’re both making the same $, just one person has much higher loans.

The starting salaries for public school teachers in Erie county is anywhere from $33,000 to $42,000 depending on the district.

LOLERS you really don’t think people that go to big name schools come out better connected and have better opportunities? I guess I see your point to an extent but it is far from an absolute.

No… not at all, you go to a big name school for the Alumni network… :banghead:
