Working with your hands vs. formal education

“The income per capita is $28,376, which includes all adults and children. The median household income is $41,809.”

Eh, I have a business degree and I fix cars. I pushed papers for the last 2 years and made 3x the $ but hated most of my days. My wife is going to be a pharmacist so we’ll have lots of $ and I can do what I love. Win/Win.

dude, myrtle beach isn’t really that nice, it’s a redneck vacation town

Honestly, I would never vacation there unless it was paid for. It’s also not a major city. Nothing going on besides retail sales, restaurants, hotels, and golf.

:word: Not great compared to some areas…

But in my area it’s great. which also figures in cost of living, etc…

PS: Little more then 70k, Don’t get me wrong now I’m just using my own experiences as an example. Everyone’s situation is different.

Hit it right on, the area pop is around 300k

^word

its like a closer daytona

do you run a harley davidson store?

lol

civil engineering.

job w/ the DOT…

Yeah, it’s not the best $, but then again, I didn’t spend $100k going to school for 4+ years.

really? is that how much an engineering degree at UB costs?

I’m not talking an engineering degree.

I’m comparing this to a teaching degree at a private school, like I said in my previous posts.

Or, to avoid flamage, an Arts degree at some high end school

Uh oh, welcome Beck Jr.

:mamoru:

:eekdance: No but if I did I would make much more. Them harley boys sure go into some debt now. I’m a suit an tie guy everyday, expect weekends of course…

Me too, I’m going out on a rig Monday, yippy.

:nerd:

Have to pull out the coveralls, hardhat, and steel toes.

I love my choice in careers, I’m so glad I didn’t choose my other thought. Music school for playing the trombone, yah dig?

Or didn’t waste all their time being nerds:nerd:, got by doing the bare minimum because they didn’t have to read all the books and do all the homework and still had a life outside of school to work and have fun?

Being good at school is something dumb people do because they can’t get by in the real world.

Would you rather be book smart or street smart?

Dude… thats way more than what at least 90% of NYSPEED made last year, or will make this year. Probably 2x what most of them are making.

BUT - What does the cost of living look like down there? I’ve also doubled the avg income in Akron… but the cost of living in Akron, isn’t any cheaper than Buffalo, its more.

People who were good at school didn’t do any reading they didn’t want to do or homework or be nerds. They just came in hung over and aced the test. However some of us do read for pleasure. Imagine that. And who needs work when you can get good grades and get paid to go to school? Other than internships that I did by choice, I never had to get a job til 23.
I’d rather be both. Book smart people can learn street smarts through experience. The other way around, not so much.

I think that everyone missed the point of the article. This does not surprise me one bit.

The author wasn’t downplaying his education. He was writing about the merits of doing what you want for the rest of your life to enjoy the time you have here on this earth. Being true to ones self and doing what you can to survive, making use of your natural talents. Open minded individuals who have a thirst for life and show some ambition to achieve more than what they could just settle for.

The author could have done much with his education. He could have made quite the career out of it. He instead chose to take a path that spoke clearly to what he felt was a better choice for HIS life. He wasn’t saying everyone should turn off, tune in and drop out. He was merely making a case for being true to yourself. What that is clearly is a very individual and unique thought based on a very unique set of circumstances.

I find often that a majority of NYspeed seems to pass off the wisdom of our elders. These people have been on this earth longer than us, their experience is timeless and whether or not it can be applied to the model of life you chose does not make it wrong. Merely something to ponder with an open mind. Life lessons come in stages, much like developmental stages of a child. Until you reach that stage it is difficult to understand just what that lesson means. Old people know shit. Listen to them. Process it. If it fits, assimilate the knowledge, if it doesn’t discard it. However realize that just because it doesn’t fit your reality does not mean that it’s wrong.

I won’t say what life should or should not be about. If to you it means amassing as much stuff as possible in as little time you have then more power to you. The is something to be said about the quality of life when you are free from excessive burdens to enjoy life how you see fit.

This board needs more people who can approach a situation with an open mind.

My brother has a PHD and is unemployed.

Great article.

You’re a different breed Don. And a great person because of it.
I wish I knew more old people to talk about the past recessions etc…
All my older relatives are dead so I have limited interaction with seasoned vets.

There is NO replacement for life experiences.

People who suck at life brag about living in Akron.

I for one don’t live to buy. I work hard so that I don’t always have to work. I’m more than happy to seem like a slave to education and my career so that when I’m an old curmudgeon I can do whatever I feel like. Sacrifice today to live tomorrow. I’d rather be able to live a full life without want than settle and work for less to justify an easier life now.

That was why I pointed out him living in Hyde Park. He clearly has money, sure is a lot easier to enjoy working with your hands when you aren’t breaking your back to pay the bills to put food on your family’s table.

Most NYSpeeders that care to post or allude to how much they claim to make annually haven’t made any real money yet and are still kind of amazed at themselves that they finally make more than $8/hr but have yet to realize that they still don’t have shit.
